FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas/PITTSBURG, Kansas—Death, taxes, Maygan Shaw breaking a school record.

For the third consecutive meet, Shaw ran a school record. In the first two meets, she broke a school record as a member of the 4x400 relay team. This time, she broke it individually.

Shaw, a senior from Pineville, clocked a 52.90 in the 400-meter dash Invitational at the Tyson Invitational, which broke Sanaria Butler's record of 52.92 set a year ago.

That performance led a strong day for Northwestern State at both the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas and the Gorilla Classic at Pittsburg State on Friday.

In a loaded field, the senior finished 15th out of 37 competitors. She is the only runner outside of either a power conference school or competing for their country. Amber Anning, competing for Great Britain, broke the meet record, clocking a 50.57, breaking Alexis Holmes record of 50.80 set last season.

"Maygan had a great day," associate head coach Adam Pennington said. "It was not quite what we were aiming for, but any time you become the best in school history, it's special. We have had some of the nation's best 400m runners and she sits at the top. That's a special moment for her.

"As a coach, this means a lot to me. We are from the same area, attended the same elementary and middle school. She has been great on the track but she's an even better person. I couldn't be more excited to share this moment with her. We are aiming for a national time. And I believe she's capable of running 52.2 and making it to the NCAA championship.

In the regular women's 400-meters, Khaliyah Anderson ran a 55.81 to place 21st. Samari Finney (57.07) and Jayla Mason (57.30) placed 39th and 41st, respectively.

On the men's side in the 400-meter dash in Arkansas, Kason Jones ran an indoor personal best with a time of 47.51, finishing fifth out of 56 finishers.

Jones was one of three Demons in the top 12, as he was joined by William Achee (47.79) and Galen Loyd (47.79), who finished 11th and 12th, respectively. Achee's time is a personal best.

"The guy's 400 ran well," Pennington said. "I was very pleased overall with that group. Khaliyah Anderson ran her second fastest 400 ever so I thought she also had a great day. Samari looked great in the long jump. She is figuring some things out but has continued to show she's ready to jump far."

In the men's 60-meter dash, Elijah Rowe clocked a 7.00 to place 19 out of 33.

At the Gorilla Classic at Pittsburg State, Dynia Lewis had a strong performance. In the 60-meter hurdles, Lewis finished third with a time of 8.58, which tied a season best.

Right behind Lewis was Raven-Symone Jarrett placed sixth with a personal-best 8.67.

Silet Gray (8.94) finished 17th and Madison Brown clocked a season-best 9.00 to finish 21st.

Lewis followed her hurdles performance up with a fourth-place effort in the 60-meter dash, running a personal-best 7.57.

"Dynia and Raven had a great day in the hurdles and Dynia and Sileena had great 60m," head coach Mike Heimerman said. "It is great to see them all in the finals tomorrow. Peyten had a good day in the vault. The throwers had solid day in the weight throw. Bernesha had a PR and barely fouled a deeper one. There were a lot of solid performances.

"Most importantly, we got in a lot of good work that will hopefully show in a couple weeks. It was a long day today and it will be a long day tomorrow, but it should be a fun one and the athletes will get after it."

Sileena Farrell finished right behind Lewis in fifth with a time of 7.58.

Victoria Byrd (7.81) placed 22nd, while Briana Green (7.88) finished 26th. Jessica Pitcher ran a season-best 8.00 to finish 34th.

A couple personal bests in the men's distance events, as John Klein smashed his previous best with a 15:14.88 to place 18th out of 44, beating his previous best by more than a minute and a half. He was in 39th place about halfway through, but stormed back in the back half of the race to place in 18th overall and third in his heat.
