HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—After scoring four goals Friday night, the Northwestern State added two more and another victory, winning 2-0 Sunday over Alabama A&M at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
The Demons (2-4-1) received goals from
Emily Gundin and the second in as many games for
Paige Baumgartner en route to their second consecutive victory.
"I am happy to pick up a second win and to go 2-0 on the weekend," head coach
Ian Brophy said. "It was needed and now we have a chance to build momentum going into Southland Conference play."
AAMU (1-6) lost its second consecutive game after winning its first contest of the season during a four-match homestand.
Late in the first half, Gundin started the scoring for the Demons after nearly an entire first half of scoreless play.
Gundin scored in the 41st minute off a free kick. It was assisted by
Caroline Hilliard and
Madison Murphy.
Gundin tapped the ball in from a yard out after a scrum in box with the ball ending in her possession.
The goal was a fitting end to a first half that was controlled by Northwestern State on the stat sheet, as the Demons out-shot the Bulldogs 8-4 and had seven corner kicks to Alabama A&M's zero.
In the second half, the Demons wasted little time doubling the score.
Less than seven minutes into the half, Baumgartner found the back of the net for the second time in as many games, scoring unassisted in the 52
nd minute to give Northwestern State some breathing room.
Baumgartner's goal was the only shot the Demons attempted in the second half, as the defense protected the two-goal lead.
"Paige has had a hot start to the season," Brophy said. "She has created so many opportunities that you know goals would come."
The assist went to
Emily Senatore, who recorded a five-point week after scoring two goals Friday against Jackson State.
That stingy defense took over from there.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Demons 5-1 in the second period to even the shot attempts at nine apiece, but none snuck past Northwestern State goalkeeper
Kora Fry, making her first start as a Demon.
Fry recorded a season-high four saves in posting her first career solo shutout.
"Kora had a great game today and came up huge for us to earn that shutout," Brophy said. "She made some big saves in big moments, including a couple 1v1 chances for them. I am really happy for her."
Her performance came after filling in for
Libe Banuelos for most of the game against Jackson State and finishing off a combined shutout.
The shutout is the third consecutive shutout for the Demons after tying Abilene Christian and winning 4-0 last time out against JSU.
It is the first time Northwestern State has recorded three consecutive shutouts since 2022 when the Demons shut out Lamar, Nicholls and Texas A&M-Commerce.
Like last game, the Demons recorded shot attempts from a number of different players, as seven different players recorded shot attempts and only Baumgartner and Ravina Sandu recorded more than one shot.
Alicia Cohen attempted three of the Bulldogs nine shot attempts.
The Demons head back to Natchitoches for three consecutive matches, beginning Thursday with a visit from Tarleton State and ending with the first game in conference play against Nicholls.
