NATCHITOCHES—On Senior Day, it just made sense for the Northwestern State soccer seniors to give the fans a show.
Four seniors scored six of the Demons (4-4-1) goals in a dominant 7-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State (1-3) on Sunday afternoon at the Demon Soccer Complex.
Three of the seniors—
Kassi Schoen,
Sara Fernandez and
Alina Graf—all scored their first goals in their Northwestern State career, with Schoen and Fernandez each scored multiple games.
"To see a senior be a part of every goal—whether the goal or an assist—is a very positive thing," head coach
Ian Brophy said. "It is certainly an ideal day with all those seniors either scoring or assisting. It made for a perfect Senior Day."
The seven goals are the most since an 8-0 win against Jackson State in 2018.
It was also the fifth consecutive shutout, the most since the Demons posted six consecutive shutouts in October 2021.
While Northwestern State finished scoring a touchdown of goals, it didn't start that way.
It took until the 27
th minute to find the back of the net, when
Isabella Ruggiano scored to break the ice.
Dawson Marrs attempted back-to-back shots and there was almost an own goal in the 16
th minute, but MVSU goalkeeper Sydney Whitten saved it before it trickled across the goal line.
But Ruggiano opened the floodgates for the Demons in the 27
th minute.
Ruggiano scored her second goal in as many games and started the scoring for the Demons.
Schoen added her first goal as a member of Northwestern State, scoring in the 40
th minute to double the lead, putting distance in between the two teams, as the Demons led 2-0 at halftime.
The second half was all Demons, tallying five goals, the most since five in that 8-0 win in 2018 against JSU.
The lone non-senior to score was
Emily Senatore, who scored her team-best third goal of the season, to put the home team in front 3-0 in the 54
th minute.
Less than five minutes later, Fernandez tallied her first of the game.
Fernandez sent a terrific pass across the field to
Taylor Spitzer, who couldn't quite send a shot in, but tapped it back to Fernadez to do the rest. She blasted a shot from the box that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced over the line for the goal.
"You know if she is around the goal, if she can get her left foot on it, it is probably going to be a goal," Brophy said. "She has a ton of power and accuracy with that shot, so it is great to see her get on the field and put two goals away."
Fernandez added a second one in the 67
th minute to make it 5-0 on a breakaway after being found by Ruggiano on a lead pass. From the left side of the box, she blasted a shot past Whitten top right shelf.
"I wasn't anxious at all today," Fernandez said. "I knew today was my day, essentially. I talked to (athletics trainer) Kristina (Overholt) before the game and told her that I had to get one today. It is really awesome that it happened today."
After a handball in the box in the 79
th minute, Graf was chosen to attempt the penalty kick, and she did the rest.
The defender scored going bottom right for her first Demons goal.
"I don't score a lot of goals," Graf said. "I am usually defending it, so when I score, it's a really exciting moment for me. I am also happy I can contribute something to the team offensively, not just defending. It was the perfect day for me."
The final goal came off the foot of Schoen, who scored in front of the net after a throw-in from another senior
Caroline Hilliard and tip from
Annie Stook.
"It was a good look in the box," Schoen said. "I just wanted to be on end of it, so I did whatever I could to time my runs well and get on the other end it, so that is what I did and was right there for the goal after Annie got the tip."
The Demons posted a combined shutout, as seniors
Libe Banuelos and
Kora Fry each posted a scoreless half and each recorded two saves.
Northwestern State registered season-highs in goals (7) and shots (24), as it out-shot MVSU 24-8.
The Demons open Southland Conference play with a visit from Nicholls on Sept. 22 before embarking on a three-match road trip.
