KINGSTON, Jamaica/HVIDOVRE, Denmark—Another week, another major opportunity for Northwestern State athletes to make a name for themselves in a country's national championships.

Vying for a spot in the upcoming Summer Olympics, Djimon Gumbs and Mikkel Johansson compete in a country's championships.

Johansson, competing in his native Denmark, is running both the 100 and 200-meter dash at the Danish Championships.

The 100 takes place Saturday, with the prelims at 2:42 p.m. and the finals at 5:47 p.m. The 200 runs at 2:20 on Sunday for the prelims with the finals running at 5:55 p.m.

After competing in the British Virgin Islands, his home country, this past weekend, Djimon Gumbs travels to Jamaica as he aims to vault into the top 32 in the world rankings in the shot put.

Gumbs competes at 5:05 in the shot put, with 12 athletes competing in the event.

Once again, the Olympic standard is 21.50 for Gumbs as he aims to make the Olympics in the shot put. There is another way to qualify, though, based on the points system.

Depending on where an athlete finishes and what meet he or she goes to, the athlete earns a certain number of points.

If the athlete is ranked in the top 32 in the world, they earn an automatic berth to Paris.

Currently, Djimon ranks 62nd in the men's shot put in the world rankings with 1147 points. The 32nd-ranked athlete in points in the event is Ole Miss thrower Tarik O'Hagan, who has 1220 points.

Johansson earned a spot in nationals as a part of the 4x100 relay team, but the team did not finish. He earned points in the 200-meter dash at the SLC Outdoor Championships, finishing seventh with a time of 21.20.

His best time in the 200 (20.97) finished with the eighth-best time in the conference in 2024, while he had the 16th-best time (10.44) in the 100.
