EUGENE, Oregon—It was a tremendous showing for Northwestern State senior
Zachaeus Beard, but his time fell just short of qualifying for finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday evening at Hayward Field.
Beard, a First Team All-American from Fellowship, clocked an impressive 10.11 in the men's 100-meter dash in the semifinals, slightly faster than the 10.16 he ran in the first round.
He finished sixth out of nine in the second heat, which featured Noah Lyles, one of the fastest runners in the world.
The top two in all three heats made finals, as well as the next fastest three times.
Overall, Beard placed 16
th out of the 27 competitors.
Lyles led the way with a time of 9.80, just ahead of Kenny Bednarek's 9.82. Christian Coleman finished third in the semifinals, running a 9.86.
Former Texas A&M-Commerce sprinter J.T. Smith reached the finals (9.94), as did high school phenom Christian Miller (9.94).
Beard ends his Demons career with an outdoor First Team All-American honor in the 100-meter dash, as well as an indoor Second-Team All-American honor in the 60-meter dash.
In the 2024 outdoor conference meet, Beard collected a gold as a member of the 4x100 relay team, as well as three silvers.
