ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands/EUGENE, Oregon—The Northwestern State trio of Djimon Gumbs, Diamante Gumbs and Zachaeus Beard took one step toward a trip to Paris on a strong day for all three at their respective meets Saturday evening.

Djimon Gumbs took the top spot in the shot put and twin brother Diamante grabbed the victory in the discus on the second day of the British Virgin Islands Championships, while Beard advanced to the semifinals in the U.S. Olympic trials Saturday evening.

Beard clocked a 10.16 in the 100-meter dash in the first round of the U.S. Olympic trials, punching his ticket to the semifinals and moving one step closer to going to July's Summer Olympics.

Running in lane six in the third heat, Beard automatically qualified for the semifinals, finishing third in the heat, as the top five in each of the five heats, plus the next two fastest times, advance to Sunday's semifinals.

Overall, he finished 15th out of the 35 finishers.

Beard is joined in the semis by former Southland Conference sprinter J.T. Smith, who ran collegiately at Texas A&M-Commerce.

After winning the javelin on the first day of competition, Djimon tossed a whopping 19.50 in the shot put to win the event and set a BVI all-comers record. He also came in second in the discus with a toss of 53.86 meters.

In the events, the twins flip-flopped who won the events, as Diamante won in the discus after emerging victorious in the hammer on day one.

Diamante's 56.40 meters in the discus not only won the event but was also a BVI all-comers record and nearly set a personal mark. He finished third in the shot put, tossing 16.48 meters.
