LUBBOCK, Texas—The Northwestern State track and field teams have been a freight train and have showed no signs of slowing down.
Top performances from
Vanessa Balde,
Diamante Gumbs,
Lynell Washington and
Zachaeus Beard contributed to a stellar showing on the first day of the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
Gumbs set the tone with a school record in the hammer throw, continuing a tremendous season in the event for him. The senior tossed a 195-7 on his second throw to set the program mark.
He also broke the mark on throw one, but he was not satisfied, recording a 195-7 to find the record books again to finish fifth in the hammer throw.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Beard ran one of the best times in the NCAA this outdoor season, sprinting to a blistering 10.00 to win the event.
The Demons had four in the top 16 in the event out of 72 competitors.
Keontae Gaines (10.29) placed eighth,
Cyrus Jacobs (10.31) finished 11
th and
Mikkel Johansson's personal-best 10.41 was good enough for 16
th.
Vanessa Balde posted a top performance in NSU in her signature event, the women's 100-meter hurdles, where she clocked a 13.13 to place third.
It is the top mark in NSU history, surpassing the 13.14 ran by the late Daeshon Gordon in 2018.
Abria Paul ran a personal-best 16.75 as well.
Washington ran a blazing 11.35 in the women's 100-meter dash to place sixth, as she posted an NSU top performance.
Victoria Byrd ran an 11.61 to finish 11
th and
Jessica Pitcher clocked a 12.23, both recording personal bests.
Beard continued a strong performance in the men's 200-meter dash, running a 20.79 to place fourth out of 56.
Johansson ran another personal best, clocking a 20.90 to finish seventh.
Beard and Johansson was half of the 4x100 relay team that ran a season-best 39.54 to place third.
On the women's side in the 200, Balde continued her sensational meet, clocking a personal-best 23.61 to finish fifth.
She finished second among Lady Demons, placing right behind
Sanaria Butler, who finished fourth with an outdoor best 23.46.
NSU placed four in the top eight, as
Maygan Shaw (23.83) and Washington (23.99) came in seventh and eighth, respectively.

Tranasia Jones (24.50),
Samari Finney (24.57), Byrd (24.59) and
Kahliyah Anderson (24.62) all finished inside the top 20, while the redshirting Anderson ran unattached.
Sileena Farrell finished just outside the top 20, placing 23
rd with a personal best time of 24.83.
Both
Taj Morris (14.08) and
Tim Pelkmans (15.23) tied season bests in the men's 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth and 21
st, respectively.
Jaysaun Smith ran a personal-best 47.84 in the men's 400-meter dash, placing 15
th out of 40.
In the jumps,
Madison Brown posted a personal best in the pole vault.
Brown cleared 13-4.25 to finish second out of 13 competitors, dominating her previous best of 12-8.75.
Annemarie Broussard cleared a season-best 12-11.25 to finish sixth.
NSU had two of the top three finishers in the women's long jump, as Butler (19-11) and Finney (19-10.25) came in second and third, respectively.
In the throws, two finished in the top six of the women's hammer throw.
While Gumbs dominated on the men's side, two more set personal bests on the women's side in the hammer throw.
Bernesha Knowles placed second, tossing a personal-best 175-2, while
Kaitlyn Washington threw a personal-best 156-8 to finish sixth. Her previous best was 148-01.
The teams finish the meet in Lubbock on Saturday. NSU's events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's triple jump and
Jaslyn Smith. The last events NSU takes part in start at 4 p.m. with the men's shot put and women's shot put.
