LUBBOCK, Texas—Any time an athlete accomplishes a feat that has not happened at Northwestern State since 1982, you know it is a major achievement.
NSU thrower
Djimon Gumbs did just that, breaking the NSU record in the men's shot put on the second and final day of the Corky/Crofoot Shootout on Saturday on the campus of Texas Tech.
Gumbs, a senior from Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, threw a 66-7 to break the school record that had been held since 1982.
Gumbs has dominated the record books in the event, but finally took over the top spot. Campbell recorded a 65-8.75 in 1982 to originally set the mark.
He wasn't the only one with that last name to perform well in the event, as twin brother
Diamante Gumbs posted a season-best 57-0 to finish sixth.
"I'm very pleased with the performances these last two days," head coach
Mike Heimerman said. "These student-athletes never stop being hungry for more. The sprinters were awesome and the throwers where awesome. It was so incredible to set two school records this weekend. Djimon (Gumbs) was awesome today after being outside all day and still throwing 20.29. I am very happy with where the whole group is and like where we are headed into the conference meet."
The Gumbs twins were not the only ones to show out in the final meet of the outdoor season before the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
On the women's side,
Shakera Williams also posted a season best, tossing a 46-6.25 to finish seventh in the shot put.
The Demons went 1-2 in the men's shot put section B, as
Justin Craft (52-4.5) and
Tarajh Hudson (51-4.25), with the former recording a personal best.
Carnitra Mackey finished second in the women's shot put section B, tossing a 46-10.25.
Freshman
Seth Smith posted a personal best in the discus section B, tossing a 161-1 to finish sixth.
Shakera Kirk placed second in the women's discus section B, throwing a personal-best 159-9.

Djimon Gumbs also posted a season best in the men's discus, placing fifth with a distance of 186-3.
Tarajh Hudson (177-8) and
Diamante Gumbs (175-8) came in eighth and ninth in the event, respectively.
In the main women's discus event,
