AUSTIN/SAN MARCOS, Texas—Remember how the Northwestern State women's 4x400 relay team broke the school record on day two of the Texas Relays?

Well, the quartet—Vanessa Balde, Sanaria Butler, Tranasia Jones and Maygan Shaw—did one better on the final day of competition at the meet, obliterating the school record and Southland Conference record by running a 3:32.67 to win the event at the Texas Relays on the final day of the meet Saturday.

It smashed not only the 3:35 it ran Saturday, but the conference record as well, which was originally set by former SLC member UT-San Antonio (3:34.05) back in 1996.

In addition to the relay team, thrower Djimon Gumbs also had a strong day in Austin.

In the men's shot put, Gumbs tossed a 62-5.25 to finish second of 15. He also posted a season-best 186-1 in the men's discus.

"It was a great weekend across the board," head coach Mike Heimerman said. The 4x4 was phenomenal. This was Djimon's opening meet and it's the furthest throw ever to open a season. Zach (Beard) ran fast, Cyrus (Jacobs) ran fast, Samari (Finney) ran fast. All over the board it was great so I'm very happy."

Twin brother Diamante Gumbs threw a 178-3 in the discus.

On the women's side in the discus, Kaitlyn Washington posted a personal-best 160-11 to finish eighth. Shakera Kirk tossed a 152-0 in the discus.

Less than an hour away at the Bobcat Invitational, NSU recorded more personal and season bests.

Zachaeus Beard continued his stellar season, running a personal-best time of 10.20 to win the men's 100-meter dash.

Mikkel Johansson also posted a personal best, running a 10.55 to finish 17th out of 60.

Teammate Tavis Wilson finished right behind him, running a 10.56.

Jaysaun Smith ran a 10.72.

Cyrus Jacobs (47.34) posted a personal best and Desmond Duncan (48.75) registered a season best in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing 10th and 29th out of 58 runners, respectively.

On the women's side in the 100, Samari Finney ran a personal-best 55.30 to place 14th out of 59.

Taj Morris ran a season best in the men's 110-meter hurdles running a 14.38 to come in 16th out of 57.

Jessica Pitcher also ran a season best with a time of 15.03 in the women's 100-meter hurdles.

In the jumps, Andrew Gilreath and Jaslyn Smith each posted personal bests.

Gilreath accomplished his in the men's triple jump, recording a 49-7.25 to place fifth out of 28.

Smith also finished fifth, doing so in the women's triple jump. She registered a 40-6.25.

In the throws, Shakera Williams and Carnitra Mackey each accomplished season bests in the women's shot put, as Williams threw a 45-2.25 and Mackey tossed a 45-1.5.

"It was a great weekend, and these kids did a lot of events at two meets over three days," Heimerman said. "They are an amazingly talented group that feeds off of each other and push each other. They are so much fun to be around. It's been a long weekend and I'm looking forward to getting home."

The teams take a week off before hosting the Leon Johnson Invitational for a two-day event, beginning April 12.
