Demons pick up first SLC win, fall in series finale

BEAUMONT, Texas – Northwestern State started Saturday by closing out the weather-delayed game with a 6-1 victory but was unable to complete the series win falling in the final to Lamar 6-2.

After more than 18 hours between pitches following Friday's lightning-delayed game the Demons (12-18, 1-5) scored four runs in the final two innings to secure its first Southland Conference win of the season and the first for first-year head coach Lacy Prejean.

Up 2-0 after runs in the first and second innings on Friday, the Demons offered an immediate response to a lone Cardinal run in the bottom of the fifth once play resumed on Saturday morning.

A pair of base hits in the top of the sixth put two runners on for NSU. With two outs later in the inning, Ashlyn Walker pulled a ball to left field for the Demon's third hit of the inning bringing in two runs and stretching the lead to 4-1.

Walker advanced to second on the throw home allowing her to score easily from there on a chopper up the middle off the bat of Aly Delafield giving the Demons the 5-1 edge going to the bottom of the sixth.

The three-run support was more than enough for Kenzie Seely who made her fifth appearance in relief on the season tossing the final two innings of the game to complete the win.

The Demons picked up their final run of the game in the seventh after Mia Liscano started the frame with a single, scoring on a Tristin Court base hit to right.

Game 3: Lamar 6, NSU 1

Like they did in the first inning of the game two, the Demons jumped ahead early in the series finale with a run in the top of the first.

Bailie Ragsdale took the second pitch of the game out to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt on the third pitch to quickly enter scoring position. The hottest hitter in the Demon order, Court shot a ball to right center for her team-leading 12th double, bringing Ragsdale around and give the Demons the 1-0 lead three batters into the game.

NSU started the second inning the exact same way they did the first to get another run in scoring position with one out. This time however the clutch hit did not come. Lexie Roos drew a walk to put a pair on but a strikeout and liner to third ended the scoring threat.

The Demons left another two-out scoring chance pass them by in the third as well, opening the door for the pivotal moments of the series finale in the bottom of the inning.

Maggie Darr retired the first two batters of the inning with relative ease, getting some help from Aly Delafield at first who dove for first to get Lamar's speedy leadoff batter for the second out of the inning.

The runner was initially ruled safe on the play, but a lengthy discussion between the umpires and an even longer review, overturned the call for the second out, but the delay worked in the Cardinals' favor.

Two straight hits, on the first pitches of the at bats, and a walk loaded the bases for the two-out gut punch that came on a grand slam to give the Cardinals the 4-1 lead in the blink of an eye. Lamar picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double turned into a run on a wild pitch.

NSU's next base runner did not come until Kennedy Reynolds worked a two-out, pinch-hit walk  in the sixth, leaving little time and opportunity to attempt to erase the four-run deficit.

The Demons threatened a comeback in the seventh with two straight hits from Sophia Livers and Kat Marshall to start the inning. A groundout and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Court.

She drove in her fifth run of the week on a fielder's choice to third, but Lamar picked up a crucial second out in the process. A hard liner to second ended the game and the late-inning dramatics.
