SAN MARCOS, Texas –
Kenzie Seely gave Northwestern State six strong innings of work in the circle for her 11
th career complete game, but the bats managed just a lone run in a 2-1 loss to Creighton on Friday afternoon.
The senior from Whitney, Texas, making her second start in two days, threw 6.0 innings scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run against the Bluejays (1-1). She had just two strikeouts in the game but only allowed one free pass on a hit batter early in the game.
"Kenzie is a competitor and she absolutely showed that today," head coach
Lacy Prejean said. "I wanted to give her the ball again today because I know much determination and toughness she has a pitcher and player. She had command of the zone, didn't walk anybody and put us in a position to win."
The Demon (1-2) bats scuffled on their first trip through the lineup with eight of the nine batters retired, save for a first-inning walk from
Laney Roos. She drew a walk in her second at-bat as well, immediately following a four-pitch walk by
Taylor Williams for NSU's biggest scoring threat of the game in the fourth inning.
Down a run after Creigton scored on a sacrifice fly in the previous half inning,
Ashlyn Walker tied the game with her fifth RBI of the season on a deep fly to left for an answering sac fly. Roos was left standing at third to end the inning after one of seven strikeouts from Creighton reliever Natalia Puchino who entered the game after the walk to Williams.
NSU was able to tie the game after Seely danced through a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the bottom of the third. After a pair of soft hits that found holes in the infield, Creighton loaded the bases with three base hits. They got their first run of the game on a sac fly to center, the first of three straight outs recorded by Seely, the final two coming on soft ground balls, to escape any more damage.
She induced 13 ground ball outs in the game, the vast majority serving as no challenge to the Demon infielders.
The Bluejays scratched across their winning run without hitting the ball out of the infield in the bottom of the fifth. A throwing error allowed a runner to reach who advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a ball that caromed off the glove of
Kat Marshall at first and corralled by Williams backing up with a diving barehanded stab.
The Demons got the tying run on base twice in the top of the sixth, the first coming on a walk to
Mia Liscano and the second on another walk, the third of the day to Roos. Liscano was thrown out trying to steal second and Roos was stranded at first on an inning-ending strikeout.
Williams scored NSU's only run of the game and Roos reached base in all three of her plate appearances. NSU suffered its second combined no-hitter of the season.
The Demons wrap up opening weekend with a morning doubleheader against Southern Illinois and Kennesaw State beginning at 10 a.m.
