Demons suffer OT season-ending heartbreaker to SFA in SLC Tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—Overtime giveth, overtime taketh away.

Two days after a thrilling overtime victory against Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference Tournament quarterfinals, the same fate happened against Northwestern State (11-8-2) in the semifinals, as Stephen F. Austin (13-3-2) scored in the 99th minute to win it 1-0 to put an end to another successful soccer season on Thursday evening.

It was the fifth consecutive overtime game during the SLC Tournament, dating back to 2022.

Jayme Bailey, a First Team All-SLC selection, broke loose in the overtime period in the right side of the box and blasted a shot that found the back of the net top left of the goal past Libe Banuelos, who had a sensational final game in her collegiate career.

"I thought we played really well," head coach Ian Brophy said. "Without looking at the stats, I felt we deserved to win the game. We were pushing and it felt like we could have won it. We had chances throughout the game and we were there every step of the way.

"I am proud of the performance and proud of our team. It sucks to lose and sometimes in soccer, you need a little bit of luck and we didn't get it tonight."

That was the final chance in a final 30 minutes filled with golden opportunities both ways.

Despite the loss, Banuelos was the best player of the team for either team.

Off a free kick from the edge of the left side of the box, Banuelos was there to make the stop.

Then in the 73rd minute, the Lumberjacks had a great chance on a give-and-go with all-conference selection Ava Shannon, but Banuelos made a save at the low left of the goal.

Lily Hargrave had a chance from outside the top of the box, but Banuelos made a leaping save to knock it away.

Shannon and Brielle Buchanan had opportunities as well, but Banuelos made two of her nine saves to keep it scoreless.

"It's a crime she didn't get voted on the all-conference team," Brophy said. "She clearly is one of the best goalkeepers in the conference. She should have received all-conference accolades during her two years here.

She's a great goalkeeper, makes unbelievable saves, is so brave off her line and is so great on set pieces. There is not enough I can say about Libe. She should be really proud of her career here."

The Demons had two golden chances late, but Taylor Spitzer missed just wide left and Paige Baumgartner had a great opportunity from the middle of the box after a free kick, but Sierra McCluer made one of her five saves.

"I thought all of our attacking players were dangerous. Taylor had chances. Paige had chances. I think we could have won it in that first overtime, we had some chances early. It was a great shot from Q that the keeper tips it over. We put them under a lot of pressure and definitely felt like we could have gotten a goal there. An inch here, a foot there and maybe we win the game."

Overall, the Lumberjacks won the shot battle 17-9 and 10-5 in shots on goal, but both teams had seemingly an equal number of dangerous opportunities.

In the first half, the best chance came after a violation in the box when Banuelos picked up a pass from a teammate, which resulted in a free kick in the box.

Bailey attempted the free kick from the right side of the box that blasted off the crossbar and bounced safely away.

Spitzer, Emily Senatore and Isabella Queneau all had two shot attempts to lead the way for the Demons. Maddie Bowers recorded a game-high four for the Lumberjacks.

Brophy could not thank the senior class enough for their perseverance and the way they led the team.

"I am so proud of this senior class," Brophy said. "I am proud of the transfers, proud of the kids who stuck it out. I can't thank them enough for what they have done for this program. Coach Jess (Nei) said it when talking to the team that you want to leave the program better than the way you found it, and these seniors definitely did that.
