NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Northwestern State was outpaced by a relentless offensive attack from Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-12) loss.
The Ladyjacks hit over .300 in each of the three sets with sideout percentages over 80 in the second and third sets to prevent the Demons from gaining any offensive momentum throughout the match.
The Demons kept things close in the first set, rebounding from an early deficit to pull within two points near the midpoint of the frame. A block from
Olivia Bush and
Samaya Wesson extended a string of three straight Ladyjack attack errors, and following a kill from
Teresa Garza two serves later, made it a 14-12 game.
Three ensuing SFA kills and a service ace quickly pushed the Ladyjacks comfortably back ahead by six, and although the Demons picked up some late kills from Garza and
Madisynne McQueen it was not enough to spark a late comeback.
The Demons had 11 kills with just three errors in the first, their highest kill production and lowest error total of the match, but were unable to keep up with the 19-kill first set and match-best .359 effort from the Ladyjacks.
SFA maintained the offensive edge through the rest of the match with five or fewer errors in both the second and third sets and only one player making more than two in a set after the first, Harley Krause's two in the third set.
Garza's sixth kill of the match near the midpoint of the second set brought the Demons to within four, but three Demon errors and a kill from SFA's Camryn Hill again quickly stretched the lead back up to a comfortable margin for the home team.
Garza finished the match with a team-best seven kills and the Demons put up five blocks in the game against the SFA spread offense. McQueen and Wesson each added five kills in the match with Wesson converting on five of her 11 swings without an error.
Reaghan Thompson missed the final two sets of the match due to precautionary reasons after one kill in the first.
