NATCHITOCHES—The Northwestern State women's soccer team returns home for the final time in the non-conference portion of the schedule, as the team aims to bounce back against Alabama A&M on Sunday.
The match kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex and will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Patrick Netherton and former NSU soccer player Kyle Nolen on the call.
NSU (0-4) found its footing in the second half of a 3-0 loss at Southern Miss on Thursday but couldn't find the back of the net. The Lady Demons attempted four of their five shots in the final 45 minutes but were held off the scoreboard.
It is the second and final game at home during non-conference play, as NSU heads on the road for the final two contests before conference play begins.
The meeting is the first between the two schools.
While NSU is new to Alabama A&M (0-3), head coach
Ian Brophy is not new to AAMU's head coach Prince Borde.
"Prince is a great guy and getting to see him on the other sideline," Brophy said. "We know that he'll bring a really prepared team and a team that is going to play quality soccer as well. We know we are going to have our work cut out for us."
The two coaches each coached in the state of Florida and have known each other from working several camps together and have become friends.
Each coach is in their first year at their respective schools, each aiming for win No. 1 at their school.
NSU has been able to generate more scoring chances the last two games, attempting 20 the last two games after attempting five the first two contests.
"When you're hitting the posts on your shot attempts, you know you're hitting the ball on frame," junior midfielder
Halee Griffin said. "You know that shot could have been a goal with a gust of wind in that direction. I think that hitting the post almost lights a fire under us to work harder to get the goals."
Perhaps coming back home will help the offense even more, as the Lady Demons attempted 15 shots in their lone home game and a combined 10 in their three road tilts.
Alabama A&M is in the midst of a five-match road trip to begin its season, having lost its first three of the season.
Like NSU, Alabama A&M has found the back of net once on the season, doing so in the 85
th minute at South Florida in a 5-1 defeat.
Isabelle Bernier is the lone goal scorer for the Bulldogs.
Fresh off a season-high six-save effort at Southern Miss, NSU goalkeeper
Libe Banuelos leads the Southland Conference in saves with 18, despite missing the second half at Mississippi State. She allowed a goal at the 10-minute mark against the Golden Eagles but kept the Lady Demons in the game for the entire first half when USM dominated possession.
Banuelos stopped a penalty kick in the 75
th minute, which kept NSU in the game before a pair of late USM goals sealed NSU's fate last game.
Following the match, NSU heads to Jackson State for a contest Friday and then LSU on Sept. 10 before starting league play with a pair of home games against Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 17) and UIW (Sept. 22).
