NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State plays a midweek match with designs on building on their offense and, in turn, making it difficult for their opponent's defense.
The Lady Demons (1-7) host Grambling (1-6) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. It will be the first time in two seasons that the two teams have met after NSU's reverse sweep at Grambling during the 2021 season. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and there will be no charge for admission for fans who wish to attend.
NSU is coming off their first win of the season, a 3-1 road victory at Texas Southern.
"They made us work for it," head coach
Sean Kiracofe said. "But I thought we did a good job of being able to adjust and fight back in situations to be able to get it done. I believe that they level of play we have been matched up against up to this point is going to start paying off for us."
Reaghan Thompson equaled her career high with 10 blocks in the match against Texas Southern, the third double-digit blocking effort of her career. Thompson also finished the night will 11 kills, giving her a third kill-block double-double and adding to her career lead in that category.
Thompson's individual effort against TSU has been indicative of what the Demons have seen plenty of through the early season, moments and matches of outstanding performance from one or two players at a time.
As they enter a four-match home stand this week, that also includes the first conference match of the season, the Demons will be looking for more consistency across the board as they take on Grambling, a team they have excelled against in the past.
"We have had a bunch of different great performances from individual people, but we have not been able to have that consistency of knowing we can go in a bunch of different directions," Kiracofe said. "We've seen it in practice, so we know that we're capable and that it's there, but it's about carrying it over into games."
NSU has won their last three matches against the Lady Tigers with a 29-2 overall record against them. NSU has swept Grambling in 18 of those matches and the only two losses in the series came at Grambling.
Tuesday's match is also the beginning of "Louisiana week" for the Demons. All four matches NSU plays they week are against Louisiana-based schools as they are set to host the Battle for the Boot starting on Thursday with a 7 pm start against Southeastern.
