NATCHITOCHES—For the second consecutive week, the Northwestern State track & field teams garner a pair of Southland Conference weekly awards.
For the second time in as many weeks, one of those is
Sanaria Butler, who earned the SLC Women's Track Performer of the Week. In addition to Butler's showing,
Djimon Gumbs was named SLC Men's Field Performer of the Week.
Butler, a freshman from Port Arthur, Texas, collected a pair of school records at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco.
She ran a 52.19 in the 400-meters, which broke a record, which was set by Butler the previous week at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational.
The freshman followed that with a 3:36.28 as a member of the 4x400 relay team that set another school record. She also added a 23.67 in the 200-meters.
All three events are season bests for Butler.
Gumbs earned his second SLC honor this season with a strong showing in Waco in the shot put and discus. He threw a 189-3 in the discus and a 61-9.5 in the shot put, both of which would be tops in the conference for anyone outside of Gumbs.
The junior from Roadtown, British Virgin Islands, also earned the honor following his record-breaking performance at the Cowboy Relays at McNeese to begin the outdoor season.
Following a week off, Northwestern State heads to Commerce, Texas, for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, which begin May 4.
