ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico—In his first NCAA championships,
Zachaeus Beard placed 16th in the 60-meter prelims.
He was unable to advance to Saturday's final in the event, as the top eight moved on.
Beard ran a 6.76 in the race, which matched his time from the Southland Conference Indoor Championships last month.
The senior had a strong start, but it didn't count due to a timing issue.
It was not what we were hoping for, but to finish the season an All-American was a goal of ours," sprints coach
Adam Pennington said. "I thought his first start was great and for some reason they called it back.
"He probably ran 40-50 meters. He is as mentally tough as anyone I've ever coached. I'm excited to see what outdoor brings. For now, he's going to enjoy being the first 60-meters All American in school history."
Auburn's Favour Ashe won the prelims, running a 6.51. Florida's PJ Austin (6.53) and Terrence Jones (6.54) came in second and third.
Northwestern State begins the outdoor season Saturday in Lake Charles. Beard will be back with the team for the following meet on March 17 at the TCU Alumni Invite.
