HATTIESBURG, Miss – Northwestern State grabbed three victories in singles, leading the Lady Demons to a 4-1 win against Southern Miss on Saturday.
The triumph win is the third consecutive for NSU (3-1), which improves to 13-9 against the Golden Eagles. It is the first loss for USM (1-1).
"Today we played Demons tennis on all three doubles courts and brought the right competitive mindset into singles," head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "I'm very happy for the girls beating a good Southern Miss team."
"Everyone understood the importance of playing on their own terms and competing with the right energy from start to finish. When we do that, we are very hard to beat."
Dorota Szczygielska helped the Lady Demons clinch both matches this weekend. At No. 4, she went 7-6 in the third to lift the Demons above Jackson State, and 6-4 6-3 to clinch the win against Southern Miss.
Szczygielska was paired with Renske Ubachs, a freshman, in the doubles match and secured the point with a 6-1 win to defeat the Golden Eagles Ricardo and Aulana.
Doubles pair Tjasa Klevisar and Ayu Ishibashi finished the doubles point with a 6-2 defeat over USM.
"The doubles point was huge. We did a much better job today using the momentum and getting on top of our opponent in singles," said Brobeck.
Ishibashi defeated Suhana Das of USM at No. 2 6-3 and 6-2.
Klevisar went head-to-head with Ebru Zeynep Yazgan at No. 1. Yazgan had a team best of 8-2 in singles during the 2021 season, but Klevisar defeated Yazgan 6-3 and 6-1 to win another point for the Lady Demons.
USM emerged with their single point at No. 5 against Gig Kanaphuet 6-2 and 6-1.
Singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6 went unfinished, due to NSU's dominant performance.
The Lady Demons returns to Jack Fisher Tennis Complex on Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. to face off against UL Monroe.
"Proud of the girls bringing two wins home from Mississippi," Brobeck said." We are excited for two weekends of home matches."
