Game Recap: Lady Demon Volleyball | | Brad Welborn, Assistant Sports Information Director

Lady Demons outpaced by Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Northwestern State was outdueled on Thursday night in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The most efficient offensive team in the Southland Conference showed their strength throughout the majority of the match with two sets committing four or fewer unforced errors and finishing with a .275 attack percentage.

After a small dip in the second set in their efficiency, the Islanders (20-9, 15-2) blew through the final set with 20 kills at a .410 conversion rate to complete the season and match sweep of the Demons.

NSU (13-15, 9-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match, getting a couple early blocks from Reaghan Thompson and a kill from Teresa Garza within those first five points. A handful of Demon errors and a string of five Corpus kills in the span of seven overall serves flipped the score and gave the Islanders the 15-12 lead at the media break.

The Demons found some success at times through the rest of the set, with big swings from Garza and La'Treva Kennedy creating offense, but they were not able to keep up with pace of attack by the Islanders who had seven more kills to help finish off the first set 25-18.

NSU held a slim one-point lead near the midpoint of the second set after a Breanna Burrell kill and one of eight Corpus attack errors, their most in a set on the night. A pair of serving miscues put the Islanders ahead and subsequently started an 8-1 run that put them in the driver's set for the set and the match.

Symone Wesley and Garza each added kills following the run, but Corpus put things away with a 4-1 stretch, all coming on kills from four different players, to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

The Islanders blitzed their way through the third set with 20 kills on 39 swings using a 4-1 burst to turn a one-point lead into a 12-8 advantage and then a 7-1 stretch just a few serves later to all but secure the match.

NSU will close the regular season on Saturday at UIW before returning to Corpus Christi to play in the first match of the conference tournament against the No. 8 seed.
