NATCHITOCHES—The Northwestern State women's soccer team out-shot Houston Christian 8-3 but could not break through in a 1-0 loss on Friday evening in a Southland Conference contest at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
NSU (5-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 SLC) had two goals disallowed due to an offsides call and a foul and another stopped by the HBU defense after the shot beat the goalkeeper and NSU couldn't put the first goal in the back of the net after a first half Huskies goal.
HCU (2-6-3, 2-2-1) scored the lone goal in the 32
nd minute on a goal from Mia Salas, just outside the top left corner of the 18-yard box, placing it over NSU goalkeeper
Chloe DeShazer in the top right corner of the frame.
Kat Lazor was credited with the assist on Salas' goal.
Salas registered all three shot attempts for the Huskies, including her second goal of the season.
The victory for the Huskies was their first in the series since 2018, which snapped a four-match NSU winning streak.
After taking the shots attempted edge 3-2 in the first half, NSU took five of the six shots attempted in the second half, as the Huskies played defense in the second protecting the slim edge.
"If we showed up the way we did in the first half like we did in the second half, the score might have been different," NSU women's soccer coach
Stuart Gore said.
Prior to the HCU goal, NSU had two goals disallowed, one each by
Gracie Armstrong and
Olivia Draguicevich. In the 16
th minute, Draguicevich's lead feed was perfect to Armstrong and her shot was sent in for what looked like her first goal of the season. But it was ruled offsides to keep the game scoreless.
Draguicevich, who recorded a team-high three shot attempts, had one disallowed on a header that was ruled a foul in the 28
th minute, shortly before Salas' goal, which stood as the lone tally of the contest.
The disallowed tally came following a corner kick, which was one of NSU's seven of the game, recording a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The biggest chance for the Lady Demons came in the second half, once again with Draguicevich in the middle of it.
She was denied her 32
nd career goal when she shot it from the left side of the box with the left foot, beating reigning SLC Goalkeeper of the Week Chloe Bagshaw, but the Huskies defense came back to help out Bagshaw, booting it away before it crossed the line and keep the advantage.
Armstrong had a shot hit the left post in the 77
th minute and NSU's last-ditch effort came up empty, as
Jalen Donaldson's cross into the box intended for
Taylor Spitzer, but the pass went just beyond the foot of Spitzer in the final half minute.
NSU aims to bounce back when it travels to in-state rival McNeese on Sunday before rounding out the short two-game road stretch at Lamar. The team comes home next for a two-game stint, beginning on Oct. 9 against Nicholls.
