NATCHITOCHES –
Zachary Clement's first start of the 2022 season was an award-winning one.
Clement earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week honors after a four-touchdown performance in the Demons' 35-27 Southland Conference-opening win against Lamar this past Saturday.
The award is voted on by a statewide panel of sports journalists. It is the first individual award of Clement's NSU career.
A sophomore from Broussard, Clement threw for a career-high 366 yards and equaled his career high with three touchdown passes. The 366 yards place Clement seventh in NSU's single-game passing yardage list and stand as the second-highest total produced by a Demon quarterback at Turpin Stadium.
Clement added 53 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Demons overcame a 10-0 deficit to earn their first win in an SLC opener since 2018.
Trailing by 10, Clement engineered three straight scoring drives – connecting with
Javon Antonio on a pair of touchdown passes before ending the stretch with a 35-yard touchdown run.
His 80-yard touchdown pass to
Scooter Adams put the Demons up 28-10 early in the third quarter.
Clement set career highs in passing yards, completions (28) and attempts (49) in his fifth career start.
The Demons return to action this Saturday when they host Nicholls at 3:30 p.m. inside Turpin Stadium.
