Northwestern State aims to rebound at Southeastern Louisiana

9/17/2022 11:29:00 AM

HAMMOND—The Northwestern State women's soccer team aims to rebound when it goes on the road for its first road contest in Southland Conference play against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium.

Fans unable to attend the contest can follow the game via live stats (https://lionsports.net/sidearmstats/wsoc/summary) or via live stream, which will be on ESPN+.

NSU (4-2-1 overall, 1-1 SLC) will try to come back with a victory after falling to Lamar 2-0 this past Friday evening. The contest is SLU's first conference home game after two straight wins at McNeese and Nicholls.

Despite out-shooting Lamar 13-5, NSU could not find the back of the net and the Cardinals made the most of their limited chances.

In the series history, the Lady Lions hold a 22-16-3 edge, but NSU has emerged victorious in five of the last six meetings. In those six matches, five of them have been 1-0 contests. The only one that wasn't was a 0-0 game in the conference tournament in the spring of 2021, one in which the Lady Lions won in penalty kicks.

"This rivalry has been built up the past few years," NSU women's soccer coach Stuart Gore said. "They knocked us out in the conference tournament quarterfinals a few years ago. There was some animosity built between the two teams.

"There is a new coach, but (SLU coach) Nathan (Gillespie) will try to put his stamp on the team."

Olivia Draguicevich leads the Lady Demons offense, scoring six goals and recording 12 points on the season, which both are tops in the SLC.

NSU has been the best in the league at creating chances, out-shot its opponents 118-64 this season, including 56-27 in shots on goal.

Natalee Henry is right behind Draguicevich in points on the team with eight, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. Nine different players have accounted for the 17 goals this season for NSU. There have been 14 assists on the 17 tallies.

Goalkeeper Chloe DeShazer has surrendered six goals in seven games, playing every minute for NSU, for a 0.86 goals against average and a .778 save percentage, which ranks second in the league.

SLU (4-2, 2-0) is fresh off a 3-0 shutout win at Nicholls, posting all three goals in the first 50 minutes to coast to the triumph.

The Lady Lions are a well-balanced attack offensively, as nine players have tallied their 11 goals, with no player scoring more than two. SLU has 10 assists on its 11 goals, led by Claire Huston's three, which is tied for third in the conference.

Senior Mya Guillory is the points leader for SLU with six, recording two goals and two assists.

Defensively, the Lady Lions surrendered just three shots, none of which were on frame, in the win at Nicholls.

Olivia Griffin is the main goalkeeper for SLU, playing 516 of the 540 minutes so far this season, allowing nine goals for a 1.57 goals against average.

Following the match, NSU has a single-game week, playing at SLC newcomer Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 25 before returning home for a date with Houston Baptist on Sept. 30.
