JONESBORO, Ark.—
Sam Hanking's last-minute goal earned the Northwestern State soccer team a 1-1 draw with Arkansas State on Thursday afternoon at the Arkansas State Soccer Park.
Hanking received a cross in the box off a pass from
Taylor Spitzer with 17 seconds left to send the game to a tie, due to the new rule that there is no overtime until postseason play.
On the goal, Spitzer sent a cross into the box and Hanking lifted her leg to re-direct the pass past ASU goalkeeper Damaris Deschaine to the lower right portion of the goal to send off a celebration for the Lady Demons.
Deschaine played the second half at goalkeeper for the Red Wolves after Olivia Luther played the first half, like they have done in now their first three games.
Jayme Haynes re-set the offense at midfield with a half-minute to go with NSU trailing by the goal. She passed it to
Paula Hernandez Lobato, who sent it into Spitzer to set up the equalizer.
"Arkansas State came at us in the first half and we weren't ready for it," NSU women's soccer coach
Stuart Gore said. "In the second half, we battled much better for first and second balls. We put ourselves in a hole in the first half but were able to grind it out and I'm happy for Sam to get her goal."
For the third consecutive contest, NSU (1-0-1) attempted at least 17 shots in the game, registering 18 Thursday. The visitors had opportunities to convert but could not find the back of the net before Hanking's equalizer with 17 ticks to go.
NSU won the shot battle once again, 18-12 and 8-5 in shots on goal.
Gracie Armstrong had five of the shot attempts, including four on frame. The graduate student had two late chances to tie the score, but the Red Wolves defense was equal to the task.
Natalee Henry added three, while
Olivia Draguicevich and
Emme' Fernandez each recorded a pair of shot attempts.
In the 76
th minute, a big scramble in front of the ASU net resulted in an Armstrong shot, which was stopped by Deschaine. Five minutes later, she had a decent look, but couldn't get much on her left-footed attempt that was easily saved.
ASU (1-1-1) cracked the scoreboard first in the opening half. Aliyah Williamson sent a header past a diving
Chloe DeShazer in the 18
th minute to the bottom left portion of the goal to give the Red Wolves the early 1-0 advantage.
McKenzie Robinson sent a cross into Williamson to set up the goal.
Despite the goal, DeShazer has continued to be strong in between the pipes for NSU, recording four saves.
The Red Wolves came out on fire to open the contest, controlling possession in the first 20 minutes, attempting five of its seven first half shots during that period, including the goal.
While the Red Wolves controlled the first 20 minutes, ASU scored on Williamson's header on the first major chance they had.
NSU had its share of first half chances as well, especially in the final half of the opening period. Armstrong had two chances in a row in the 22
nd minute. She attempted a shot from near the left side of the box, which was saved by Luther and Armstrong's second attempt after a rebound went back to her was also stopped by Luther.
Delaney Wells also had a chance to knot the game up at 1-1 in the 40
th minute with a shot attempt from near the right post, but Luther stopped the attempt and the rebound was booted out of harm's way.
NSU makes the journey to Dallas, as it continues its four-game road trip to begin the season with a trip to SMU on Sunday. The first home game comes against Jackson State on Sept. 9 before conference play begins.
