Two-out hits cost Lady Demons in regular-season finale

HAMMOND – Sometimes the final out of the inning can be the hardest to put in the book.

That was the case for Northwestern State on Saturday as Southeastern scored four runs with three, two-out hits in route to a 6-1 win and series sweep of the Lady Demons.

NSU finishes the regular season with a 28-20 overall record and 10-8 mark in conference play and will enter the conference tournament next week as the four seed.

Like they did in Friday's nightcap, the Lions (37-14, 14-4) jumped on the board in the first inning behind a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly to take the 1-0 lead. One of just two runs they scored on the day with less than two outs.

On an otherwise tough day at the plate for the Lady Demons, the second inning served as the highlight. Back-to-back extra-base hits from Taylor Williams (triple) and Tristin Court (double) brought in NSU's lone run of the game. The hits were the only two in the game for the Lady Demons and also came with two outs.

Southeastern regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with the first of their three, two-out hits in the game that each produced at least one run.

An RBI single in the second, a two-run home run in the third and the final blow another RBI single in the sixth that produced the sixth and final run of the game.

Court's RBI double, her second such double of the series, served as the final hit and final base runner for the Lady Demons in the game as the SLU combination of Heather Zumo, Alyssa Romano and MC Comeaux retired the final 16 NSU batters in a row to finish the game.

As the four seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament, the Lady Demons' first game is scheduled a 12 p.m. start on Tuesday at North Oak Park in Hammond.
