NATCHITOCHES – After successful appearances at LSU and Stephen F. Austin track and field meets, Northwestern State captured three of the possible four Southland Conference weekly awards, the league announced Wednesday.
Sprinters
Kie'Ave Harry and
Maygan Shaw and thrower snatched Male Track Athlete of the Week, Female Track Athlete of the Week and Male Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.
Harry jetted to a 10.23 100 meters season best at the LSU Joe May Invitational in which he led an elite field through 70 meters. Harry finished fourth in the heat and fifth overall, and his mark ranks 26
th nationally and third in the SLC.
He ran a leg of the 4x100 relay that clocked a 39.35 (17
th nationally), which fell just short of Houston (39.33) and Kentucky (39.34) but beat the likes of LSU, Ohio State and Alabama.
The weekly honor is Harry's first of season and third of his career.
Shaw and Gumbs each snagged their first weekly honors.
Shaw lowered her conference-best 400 meter time to 55.08, which won the SFA Carl Kight Invitational.
She was part of a 4x400 relay that bested the field by 15 seconds en route to a 3:46.39, which leads the league and is 28
th nationally.
Gumbs won the shot put and placed second in the hammer throw at SFA.
His 50-10.75 in the shot and 167-3 in the hammer weren't personal bests, but the marks would stand fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Southland Conference this season.
NSU entered this week with two outdoor weekly awards this outdoor season, besting that total this week.
The Demons head to Texas State this weekend in the last meet before the NSU Leon Johnson Invitational wraps up the regular season.
