NEW ORLEANS – Northwestern State used what it learned on Thursday against New Orleans and put it immediately, coming away with an impressive 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23) win in The Big Easy on Saturday afternoon.
"I was really happy with how we were able to both be disciplined with the scout and carry over what we learned from Thursday night," head coach
Sean Kiracofe. "Specifically, for sets one and two everyone did their jobs like clockwork to put UNO in positions to make errors, which they did."
For the seventh time this season the Lady Demons (15-12, 8-8) won a match in which their opponent had more kills. That was due in large part to the 30 total attack errors committed by UNO and the discipline displayed by the NSU defense to see attacks go outside the lines.
NSU got off to a torrid start on offense in the first two sets with just three unforced errors during that time for attack percentages above .250 in each set.
An 8-1 run in the first flipped the momentum as
Amina Attra provided a pair of aces during her time serving and
Breanna Burrell added a kill and a block during the stretch giving NSU the 16-10 lead. Four of the Demons' final five points of the set came on kills from four different players before the eighth UNO error of the set went long for the 25-20 final.
Two separate runs of 4-0 or longer early in the second gave the Demons a comfortable lead and one they would not see slip away. A
Symone Wesley kill, followed by an
Addison McDermott solo block, made it a 19-12 set, all but securing the 2-0 match lead.
Madisynne McQueen capped thing with one of her career-best 10 kills for the 25-19 final score.
The only hiccup on the day for the Demons came in the third set as the UNO serves opened the door for more free balls and high-percentage swings. The Privateers had just four errors, two unforced, in the 25-15 third-set win with a .375 attack percentage.
"Going into sets three and four, UNO really leaned into serving aggressively which they have done well all year and they gave us some trouble," Kiracofe said. "We did a great job staying composed moving into the fourth to stay with the scout and make a few needed changes. It was really one of our better 'team' wins during conference. There were plenty of good stat lines but it's hard to single anyone out because everyone played well."
The Demons used a pair of three-point bursts in the fourth to tie the set and then take the lead, the second of which completed by a pair of freshmen. McQueen put the Demons ahead 17-16 after helping
Reaghan Thompson with a block immediately after one of Thompson's 11 kills in the match.
After trading point over the next nine serves, Burrell took matters into her own hands, much like she did in the fifth set on Thursday. Two straight kills, one on a power swing down the line and the other on a finesse shot over the block, gave NSU the late two-point edge.
UNO held off one match point, but Thompson's final swing of the day gave NSU the season sweep of the Privateers and the head-to-head tiebreaker for the fifth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
NSU had three players record double-digit kills on the day, including the third straight and of the week for Thompson. Wesley led NSU with 20 digs and NSU reached double-digit blocks with 11 for the eighth time this season.
