Tennis challenges TCU in loss

FORT WORTH, Texas – Northwestern State tennis challenged Texas Christian in Sunday's match, but the Horned Frogs won critical points in a 4-0 sweep of the Lady Demons.

NSU (1-1) pushed TCU (3-0) in the doubles portion as Viktorie Wojcikova and Rozalie Dohnalova were playing a tiebreaker in the No. 2 slot (6-6), but the Horned Frog duo of Aleksa Cveticanin/Stevie Kennedy secured the doubles point in the top position with a 7-5 victory over NSU's Mariella Minetti and Tjasa Klevisar.

NSU's Gig Kanaphuet/Ayu Ishibashi surrendered the first doubles point at No. 3 with a tough 6-4 loss.

In singles play, Minetti captured the second set in the No. 3 hole off Stevie Kennedy, but the match went unfinished 2-1 in the third set after Kennedy took the first set 6-4.

TCU claimed its first singles points at No. 5 with Jade Otway defeating Wojcikova (6-3, 6-2) and at No. 4 with Helena Narmont besting Ishibashi (6-2, 6-2).

The clinching point came in the top position with TCU's Alisa Soloveva overcoming a Dohnalova (6-4, 6-4).

"We got better today as team, and that's the ultimate goal," said NSU coach Jonas Brobeck. "We played good doubles and put ourselves in a position to win that point.

"Credit to TCU as they played the big points better than us today. But I thought everyone adjusted well to playing indoors, and we competed well and played toward our identity. We will take the positives with us and work on some things this week."

NSU split its opening weekend after topping UT Tyler 6-1 on TCU's outdoor courts Saturday.

The Lady Demons are back in action Saturday at Tulane in a noon showdown. It's the last road match before an eight match homestand that starts Feb. 5 with a doubleheader against Loyola (La.).
