Box Score RUSTON – The Northwestern State tennis team found itself on the receiving end of the same energetic Senior Day performance they carried out just a few days before.
NSU fell flat against Louisiana Tech in singles play Tuesday, resulting in a 5-2 defeat for the Lady Demons.
"That was a tough match today," head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "But I'm glad we got to play it. For the sake of experience, it's great to be able to get tough, close matches in heading into the Southland Tournament."
The Lady Demons (6-8) clinched a close doubles decision following a tiebreaker 7-6 victory on the No. 2 court by Judit Castillo Gargallo and Viktorie Wojcikova. A 7-3 win for the Lady Techsters (8-10) at No. 1 against Mariella Minetti/Greta Wallin gave them an early edge. The Lady Demons evened up doubles with a convincing 6-2 win at No. 3 by Emilija Dancetovic and Dorota Szczygielska, raising their season doubles record to 5-2. Not long after that victory, Castillo Gargallo/Wojcikova's 7-6 tiebreaker win gave a tight doubles point to the Lady Demons.
Singles competition proved a challenge for NSU from the start. On the No. 2 court, Wojcikova ended the day with the lone singles point for NSU. After falling 6-1 in her first set against Anastasiia Salenko, Wojcikova evened the series with a 6-2 win in the second set, before taking the final deciding set 6-3.
Freshman Gig Kanaphuet's match at No. 5 against Madalena Amil was the only other match during singles competition which fell to a third set. After opening with a 6-3 win in the first set, Kanaphuet fell in the final two 6-3, 6-3.
"Unfortunately, we did not compete at the level that we had hoped to today," Brobeck said. "But each match is valuable to us, and we need to be able to use this experience to get us to the level of competition we need to be playing at come next week when we head to Beaumont for the conference tournament."
The Lady Demons' final regular season match takes place on Friday at 1 p.m. at LSU-Alexandria.
