BEAUMONT, Texas -- The Northwestern State soccer team's season came to close Tuesday in the Southland Conference tournament quarterfinals. No. 4-seeded NSU fell to No. 5-seeded Southeastern Louisiana in penalty kicks, 4-3, after seven rounds.
"Proud of the defensive effort," said co-head coach
Jess Jobe. "We put ourselves in a position to win it, and we can't ask any more from that group. Once again, it was a frustrating day from an attacking sense. We were close on a couple of occasions. We felt like we did fairly well to put ourselves in positions, unfortunately it didn't fall in the back of the net."
The Lady Demons conclude the season at 9-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play. The Lady Lions -- at 7-4-3 overall and an identical record in conference -- advance to the semifinals and battle top-seeded Stephen F. Austin on Thursday.
NSU's defense was its normal stout self on Tuesday, especially as the game wore on. Southeastern Louisiana managed 12 shots, but eight of those occurred during the first 45 minutes.
"We played a little frantic in the first half, and honestly some of it was getting the tournament jitters out," Jobe said. "We needed to calm down, take a deep breath and be reminded of who we are, and why we deserve to be there, and what's made us successful. At halftime, we attempted to do that, and I think the girls bought into that and appreciated the message."
NSU junior goaltender
Acelya Aydogmus played big in net. She made four saves to record her program-record ninth shutout of the season and second double-overtime shutout.
Northwestern State logged 10 shots, one of which was on frame. Sophomore
Olivia Draguicevich led the way with a trio of shots. Freshman
Delaney Wells registered two shots, while junior Kalee Wiliams and
Kiara Padilla, sophomore
Samantha Hanking and freshman
Cianne Talamo all had one shot apiece.
While it's a disappointing end, it shouldn't overshadow what NSU accomplished this season. Five players garnered All-Southland Conference honors with four of those named to the first-team.
The nine shutouts shattered the previous single-season program record of seven. Within that department, the six straight shutouts were also a program best.
The areas in which helped NSU achieve those high marks will represent building blocks for next season.
"We've got so much talent coming back for us," Jobe said. "As a coaching staff, we are excited about that. We are already bouncing around some ideas of how we can take things to the next level tactically."
