Seniors shine in Lady Demon loss to New Orleans

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State tennis team found itself, once again, on the wrong side of a close contest against a conference opponent. The Lady Demons dropped a 4-3 decision at New Orleans on Friday.

"We've made progress, but still have plenty of work to do," head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "On the other hand, UNO is also a much-improved team, and congratulations to them on their win."

NSU (1-3, 0-3) clinched the doubles victory against New Orleans (1-1, 1-0) off of wins from Emilija Dancetovic/Dorota Szczygielska (7-5), and Mariella Minetti/Patrycja Polanska (7-6). Dancetovic/Szczygielska remain undefeated in doubles play through their first four matches of the season.

"Dora and Emma are starting to really understand what it takes to be successful, and they were able to apply that today," head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "Early on, the results were not swinging in their favor, but they kept on doing the things they needed to come back and win."

Dancetovic and Judit Castillo Gargallo ended the day for the Lady Demons on a positive note. They both claimed wins in the final two matches of the day.

Dancetovic handled Estelle Vanthier in two sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Castillo Gargallo played in her third straight singles match in which a tiebreaker set would decide the outcome of her match. She concluded the day for the Lady Demons with 6-4, 7-6 win in straight sets.

Greta Wallin made her NSU debut Friday against Salma Abdelrahim in singles. She would fall to her opponent, 6-2, 6-3.

Singles competition again proved to be costly for the Lady Demons. Losses for Wallin, Mariella Minetti (6-2, 6-3), Viktorie Wojcikova (6-1, 6-4), and Dorota Szczygielska (6-4, 6-4) clinched the win at 4-1 for UNO.

"Doubles was better today and was definitely a step in the right direction," Brobeck said. "We came out, set the tone early and got to play on our own terms. Unfortunately, I don't think we held on to that momentum heading into singles."

The Lady Demons visit Nicholls for their next match on Sunday, which will take place at 11 a.m.
