HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Northwestern State tennis team potentially faces its toughest challenge of the season Sunday at Sam Houston.
The Lady Demons (5-5, 4-3), winners of four straight Southland matches, head to Huntsville on Sunday to face off against the Bearkats (11-2, 6-0) at 11 a.m. at the Kelly and Ina May McAdams Tennis Complex.
Sam Houston remains undefeated in conference play, having won seven straight. The Bearkats last team loss was at North Texas on Jan. 31.
"They certainly are really good," first-year head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "We're not firing on all cylinders just yet, but we are starting to click and figure some things out, and we're all anticipating competing against Sam Houston on Sunday."
In the 722 days since the programs have faced off in competition, Sam Houston -- along with four other Southland programs -- announced its departure from the conference at the end of this academic year. Sunday's meeting between NSU and the Bearkats marks the final regular-season Southland Conference match between the two schools.
Senior Emilija Dancetovic continues to be the most successful Lady Demon.
Dancetovic, along with partner Dorota Szczygielska are undefeated in doubles following a point-clinching 6-3 victory at SFA on Friday. A win at Sam Houston on Sunday for the duo will move Dancetovic's all-time doubles record to 47-25, elevating her to 16th all-time in that category. She is currently 7-3 in singles competition with her last loss to a Southland opponent coming Feb. 28 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
NSU has dominated the all-time series with Sam Houston as they currently possess a 34-3 overall record. The Lady Demons have won the past 13 meetings with Sam Houston, dating to March 25, 2007.
"If we can keep the energy high and maintain it throughout the day – just like at SFA – then this match is going to be a good one," Brobeck said. "With the weather in Huntsville looking good for Sunday, I think we are going to be in for a good day."
