NATCHITOCHES—Following a second consecutive 1-0 victory, the Northwestern State soccer team wraps up its non-conference schedule with a date with in-state foe UL Lafayette.
Admission to the contest is free thanks to the sponsorship of the Louisiana Army National Guard.
NSU (2-5) comes in following a home victory against Texas State. It was the first time the Lady Demons have won back-to-back 1-0 matches in program history.
UL Lafayette has won six consecutive meeting, including a 1-0 victory last season in Lafayette. The teams have not met in Natchitoches since 2011 when the Ragin' Cajuns won 2-1.
"Coach (Lance) Key is a good friend and I value a relationship with him," co-head coach
Jess Jobe said. "I am happy that they're having a good season, but we've got business to do. It will be a fun rivalry game for us and we're excited about the challenge."
Freshman
Hallie Field scored the lone goal in the victory against TXST, a header off a corner kick from fellow freshman
Maddie Scott.
Another freshman,
Olivia Draguicevich, leads the team with two goals. Field and sophomores
Jalen Donaldson and
Kiara Padilla all have one goal each.
The defense has been lights out recently, as the unit has allowed just 11 shots the last three games, and as a result, just one goal has been scored against the Lady Demons.
At goalkeeper,
Acelya Aydogmus started the shutout against Texas State, and
Kayla Bomben earned the shutout win against Jackson State.
UL Lafayette (4-2-1) has won four consecutive matches after going winless in the first three. The last two Ragin' Cajun victories came against Southland Conference opponents, Sam Houston State and Nicholls. The four victories have already surpassed their 2018 when they went 3-12-1.
Lance Key is in his first season as the coach for UL Lafayette, replacing Scot Wieland, and he has made his mark early, Slither-ing his way to their best seven-match start since 2015 (also 4-2-1).
UL Lafayette has seven players who have scored goals in 2019, led by Karleen Bedre and Skyla Sykes. Bedre also has four assists for 10 total points, which is fourth in the Sun Belt.
During their four-match winning streak, they shut out three opponents and have allowed just one goal total. Mackenzie Lee is the goalkeeper for the Ragin' Cajuns, and has played all but 30:52 this season.
Following the contest, the Lady Demons begin conference play Friday at rival Stephen F. Austin. NSU returns home to face Lamar Sept. 27 for the second conference match of the season after the trip to Nacogdoches.
