WACO, Texas--For the second time this weekend, there will be a homecoming of sorts, as Northwestern State soccer co-head coach Anna Jobe returns to Baylor Sunday, where she was an on the staff for nearly six seasons.
The contest will be at 4 p.m. at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
"Baylor's a special place, and what makes them so special are the people that are there," Jobe said. (Baylor Head Coach) Paul (Jobson) and (Volunteer assistant coach) Marci (Jobson) and (Assistant Coach) Chuck (Codd) are special people and they run a top-notch program.
"I learned a ton from them. The growth that I experienced underneath their leadership was incredible. They shaped me as a coach. It's going to be a special day for me."
Jobe worked at Baylor, starting with becoming a manager in 2012 to a volunteer assistant before becoming a full-time assistant coach her final two years with the program. During her time with the Bears program, she was able to take things from the Jobsons and incorporate what she and Jess do into the Northwestern State program.
"The biggest takeaway is that it's not what you do that sets you apart, it's how you do what you do," Anna Jobe said. "It's the heart and the spirit and the passion you bring in. That's the biggest takeaway for me that shaped me as a coach and it's what Jess and I are trying to instill into our players."
Anna Jobe is not the only member of the coaching staff to come back to Baylor, though, as graduate assistant coach Steffen Gawor began his career as a manager with the Baylor program from 2015-18.
Northwestern State (0-1) aims to rebound from a 7-0 loss at North Texas, and despite the score, there was positives from that game to build on. Goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus made seven saves, including several nice saves in the first half when the game was within striking distance.
Forwards Jalen Donaldson and Jayme Haynes were two fielders who stood out for the Lady Demons in the loss.
Seven freshmen started once again for NSU against UNT, and junior defender Ashley Medawattage is pleased about the progress of the young players.
"Against Little Rock and North Texas, we had seven freshmen in the starting lineup," Medawattage said. "I think that's great. I hope people look at our lineup and see the seven freshmen and think we're young and inexperienced, but in reality, we're working our butts off and I think we're meshing really nicely."
This is No. 14 Baylor's first regular season match of the season, but was dominant in 2018, finishing 20-6 and ending the season in the Elite 8. It will be another difficult challenge for the Lady Demons.
"Baylor is top-notch," Anna Jobe said. "They made it to the Elite 8 the last two seasons. They're going to expose us in some ways at times and put us under pressure at times and we'll see what we're made of and that's what we want in this early part of the season."
This is the first time Northwestern State has battled a ranked opponent since a 3-0 defeat at Ole Miss in 2016. It is also the highest ranked opponent for the Lady Demons since a 3-0 loss at Texas A&M in 2015. NSU has never beaten Baylor, with the last being a 5-0 defeat in Waco in 2014.
Following the Sunday match, the Lady Demons travel to Grambling next Friday before coming home for their first regular season match in Natchitoches against Louisiana Tech.
