LSU's length, strength pushes Tigers past Demons

BATON ROUGE – After Northwestern State challenged LSU through the first 10 minutes Sunday, the Tigers capitalized on their length and strength en route to a 109-59 Demons loss.

Junior Chudier Bile scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the first half as the Demons (2-6) tied LSU 19-19 under 10 minutes remaining.

But LSU (7-2) scored 33 of the next 40 points to race to a 26-point lead.

Four consecutive Bile points handed NSU its first lead (9-8), and the Demons took their final lead 17-15 after three-pointers by Bile and senior LaTerrance Reed sandwiched a Larry Owens layup.

"We took care of the ball when LSU didn't put pressure on us," said NSU coach Mike McConathy. "LSU turned on its press and scored 10 or 12 points very quickly.

"LSU is long and talented, and their pace lulls you asleep a little bit. They are very smooth, and before you know it, they are laying it up on the other end or have grabbed a rebound out from under you."

During LSU's first half run, the Tigers scored 11 of its 16 first-half points off turnovers and had a pair of its 14 second-chance points.

The Tigers finished with 36 points off 21 NSU turnovers and 23 second-chance points on 18 offensive rebounds.

NSU closed the first half on a positive note, scoring the final six points, including a Bile three-point heave from three-quarters court to cut LSU's lead to 52-32.

The Demons shot 8-of-25 (32 percent) from deep, their best output in the past four games.

NSU flashed its potential in one stretch of the second half when the Demons made 3-pointers on three straight possessions – two by Jairus Roberson and one by Bile.

Bile made 3-of-4 of his 3-pointers and 7-of-14 from the field. He entered Sunday with two made 3-pointers this season.

Roberson made 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Roberson's nine points and Nikos Chougkaz's eight were NSU's other leading scorers.

But the Tigers used their secondary break, full-court press and rebounding prowess to score a season-high 109 points, the most NSU has allowed since Arkansas scored 117 in 2015.

Javonte Smart scored 17 points and Emmitt Williams produced 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead seven different Tigers in double-figures. LSU shot 56 percent from the floor and nearly 44 percent from 3-point range (10-of-26).

LSU held a 47-25 rebounding edge and 18-9 on the offensive glass.

The Demons will take a 10-day break and start Southland Conference play at Sam Houston State on Dec. 18 before returning to host Lamar on Dec. 21.
