ABILENE, Texas—For the third time in five matches, the Northwestern State soccer team went into overtime, but this time, there was no scoring, as it tied league-leading Abilene Christian 1-1 on the road.
It's the first tie since a scoreless match on Oct. 21, 2016.
Senior goalkeeper
Kayla Bomben was the star of the match for NSU, saving a career-high 12 shots, including robbing ACU's Christina Arteaga in the final minute of double overtime after Arteaga broke loose and had a clean look, securing the tie.
"Bomben came up big, time after time for us," co-head coach
Jess Jobe said. "She energized the players in front of her and made huge saves. She was the difference maker and our player of the game. I'm proud of the way we played."
Her 12-save performance tied her for 10
th place with four other NSU goalkeepers for most saves in a match.
"It was a hard-earned point," Jobe said. "There were some moments we thought we could have taken all three points, but Abilene probably thinks the same."
NSU (5-6-1 overall, 2-1-1 Southland) broke a two-match losing streak against the Wildcats with the tie. It was the eighth consecutive contest that was decided by one goal or fewer.
ACU (7-2-2, 3-0-1) fell to second place with the tie, as Incarnate Word won against Central Arkansas, but are still in great shape to be a high seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Lady Demons had a few chances, but shots by sophomores
Natalee Henry and
Jalen Donaldson missed with shots and it remained scoreless.
But in the 10
th minute, Arteaga got loose behind the Lady Demons defense and Bomben came out to challenge, but Arteaga popped it over Bomben's head and into the net for the goal to put ACU in front 1-0.
NSU applied pressure immediately following the Wildcats goal, as it attempted five shots in seven minutes, including two on goal, but it remained 1-0.
That changed late in the first half, though, as a cross by freshman
Jayme Haynes was inadvertently shot in by Abilene Christian to tie the game heading into halftime.
In the second half, sophomore
Norma Trejo, who made her first start of the season for the Lady Demons, was close to breaking the tie, but her shot went just wide.
The Lady Demons had a chance in the 62
nd minute, but in the scrum in front of the net, a shot by freshman
Hallie Field was blocked.
It looked like ACU was going to grab the lead in the 80
th minute, as the ball came past Bomben in the box, but junior defender
Ashley Medawattage came through and booted the ball away from the net to keep the game tied.
ACU controlled the action in the first overtime, but was able to only send one shot in, an Arteaga shot that missed the net. The Wildcats attempted four more shots in the second overtime, but Bomben was dominant all night.
The Lady Demons controlled the first part of the second overtime, with much of possession coming in ACU territory, but the Wildcats counterpunched in the second half of the final frame.
Bomben made four critical saves in the final 3:02, highlighted by the last one on Arteaga in the 110
th minute diving to her left to rob the ACU star. Of those four shots in the closing minutes, three were by Arteaga.
The contest was tied in shots with 18 each. Thirteen of the ACU shots were on net.
Jayden Wheeler had four shots to lead the way for NSU. Ten Lady Demons attempted a shot. Arteaga had seven shots for the Wildcats, with six coming on frame, including the goal.
NSU wraps up the weekend with a trip to Incarnate Word, which is unbeaten in conference play. The contest begins at 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
