THIBODAUX—After clinching the conference tournament berth last Sunday, it is now all about seeding for the tournament.
That continues Friday evening, when the Northwestern State soccer team heads on the road to play Nicholls at 4 p.m. at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
NSU (8-7-1 overall, 5-2-1 Southland) rebounded last Sunday with a 3-1 victory against Houston Baptist. The three goals are the most scored this season by the Lady Demons. Overall, they are 8-2-1 in their last 11.
They are also 2-0-1 in their three conference matches on the road.
Nicholls (3-11-1, 0-8) comes in on an 11-game losing streak in league play. Their last conference win was last October against Stephen F. Austin, a 2-0 triumph. The Colonels have scored two goals in their eight conference contests, being outscored 35-2.
In last year's meeting, a goal off a free kick by
Kylee Dominy in the second overtime gave the Lady Demons a 3-2 victory over Nicholls on Senior Day. NSU is aiming for consecutive victories against Nicholls for the first time since 2013 and 2014.
Coming into the weekend, Lamar is trying to pull away at 7-1 in conference play, with the only loss coming to NSU. UIW is in second at 6-2, but then four teams—NSU, Sam Houston State, Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi—are tied for third at 5-2-1. McNeese is at 5-3, but still in contention for a top seed.
Freshman
Olivia Draguicevich leads the team in both goals (5) and points (10), but sophomore
Jalen Donaldson is creeping up.
The Richmond, British Columbia, native had a three-point effort against Houston Baptist and is up to eight on the season with three goals and two assists. Six of those points are in conference play. She leads the team in shots (34) and shots on goal (19).
Two of the three goals against HBU were scored off the bench. Co-head coach
Jess Jobe is happy with the depth of the team.
"The depth is a strength of our team," Jobe said. "We have a lot of players who can make an impact. Our last four games, we have had four different starting lineups. That's a good thing for us."
Defensively, the Lady Demons allowed just 12 shots in the two games last weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist. For the efforts, NSU has had three Southland Conference Defensive Players of the Week:
Hallie Field,
Natalee Henry and reigning winner
Kalee Williams.
Kayla Bomben has started the last six contests for NSU at goalkeeper. She has allowed nine goals in 824 minutes, for an average of 0.98. She is on pace to break the single season record for best goals against average in a season in NSU history. Her four career shutouts are tied for eighth in school history.
Offensively, for Nicholls, Blaire Laiche is the leading scorer. She has scored six goals and has 13 total points. Tessa Calabria is second on the team in both goals (2) and points (6).
The Colonels use two goalkeepers: senior Roosa Hurmerinta and junior Jade Gallaher. Hurmerinta has stopped 42 shots on the season and has a goals against average of 2.64. Her GAA was 1.79, but has had two tough outings in a row, allowing 11 goals in her last two starts.
Gallaher has a 3.23 GAA for Nicholls. Each goalkeeper has started four games in league play.
NSU wraps up the road portion of the regular season Sunday with a trip to Hammond to play Southeastern Louisiana. The Lady Demons return home for their final regular season match of the season against Central Arkansas Nov. 1.
