Soccer seniors to be honored Sunday against HBU

NATCHITOCHES—Northwestern State soccer's three seniors will step onto the field for the second to last time Sunday with a chance to make it three out of four years in the conference tournament.

The Lady Demons (7-7-1 overall, 4-2-1 SLC) can wrap up a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament with a win Sunday against Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

The three seniors—Kayla Bomben, Jayden Wheeler and Courtney LeJeune—will be introduced to the NSU crowd one last time after the contest against the Huskies (2-12, 1-6).

"I'll hold all the relationships I've made throughout my career at NSU," Bomben said. "That's what's special about this school that everyone is so close to one another."

Bomben, a goalkeeper from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is having a stellar season in her second year as the Lady Demons starter.

In more than 734 minutes, she has allowed just eight goals and has a near 80 percent save percentage. Bomben's 0.98 goals against average of 0.98, which is on pace to be tops in school history, and she is currently fourth in that category in career average.

The senior goalkeeper has anchored a defensive unit that has allowed one or fewer goals in 10 of NSU's last 11 games.

When this group of freshmen came in, the Lady Demons had not made the conference tournament since 2008, and have helped elevate the program to three tournament appearances in four years, including what could be two top half finishes in the league in the four seasons.

"I remember walking in as a freshman, scared to death," Wheeler said. "Just seeing how much I've come from 2016 to now. I am very confident in who I am and I think my journey in the soccer program has definitely played a part in that."

Fellow senior Jayden Wheeler has been a regular starter the past three seasons. She has four career goals, including the game-winner against Southeastern Louisiana in 2018. She also had an assist on the lone goal in the victory earlier this season against Jackson State.

"That winner against Southeastern is a feeling I'll never forget," Wheeler said. "I don't score often, but I'll remember that one until the day I die."

The Rockwall, Texas, native, is a three-time Southland Conference Honor Roll selection, and was named to the 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District and 2018 Southland Conference All-Academic teams as well.

It's been a long road for defender Courtney LeJeune, who has not be able to play the last two seasons due to injury, but has showed leadership from the sidelines.

The Gonzales, La., native, has missed the last two seasons, but co-head coach Jess Jobe said she was the most improved player before her junior season, but tore her ACL in the spring of 2018.

"It's very unfortunate what happened," LeJeune said. "But you can't be sad about it, you have to move on. Seeing the girls be successful on and off the field makes me feel successful. I am here motivating them to be better on and off the field and on the sidelines. Getting everyone excited is really fun."

But the Lady Demons have one more goal, outside of the conference tournament: and that's to win the conference tournament. They can make a major step forward to accomplish that with a win Sunday against Houston Baptist.

"We've been through a lot," Bomben said. "Us three (seniors) have helped each other get through certain situations. We went through the whole coaching change and we can now be leaders to the freshmen we have now."

After Sunday's contest, the Lady Demons have three more games remaining. They hit the road next weekend against Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana before returning to Natchitoches to wrap up the regular season Nov. 1 against defending regular season champion Central Arkansas.
