NATCHITOCHES – Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
Northwestern State scored five goals for the second straight game Friday in a 5-0 win against Southern at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
But perhaps the most impressive statistic was the Lady Demons (4-2) holding the Jaguars (1-4) to zero shots.
NSU possessed the ball virtually the entire game and held a 38-0 shot advantage with 20 on goal.
"We knew we had to execute in our moments (in the second half)," said NSU co-head coach
Jess Jobe. "We're excited about the number of shots we had and how many we put on frame.
"There was a mentality shift that took place at halftime, and we needed that. We didn't make a lot of defensive rotations back there, and they battled through. Southern is a physical team, but our defense was able to apply some information to the game and snuffed out what could have been some dangerous moments."
The Lady Demons scored early as senior
Brittany Caserma found the back of the net from close range on an assist by
April Trowbridge. Caserma scored her fourth goal of the season and the 20
th of her career.
But a stingy Southern goalkeeper fended off a barrage of NSU shots in the first half to keep the Jaguars within striking distance down 1-0.
Eriken Chioma made 14 saves on the night, including a handful of impressive stops in the first half.
NSU finally wore Southern and broke through for four second-half goals as five different players scored on the night.
Senior forward
April Trowbridge rebounded her own shot in the 56
th minute to hand NSU a 2-0 mark. Trowbridge attempted a career-high 12 shots with seven on goal, not including the numerous crosses she placed in the box.
Three freshman concluded the scoring in the final 21 minutes of the contest.
Midfielder
Norma Trejo scored from in front of the goal as she rebounded a
Skylar Sorrell shot. Sorrell recorded her first collegiate point with the assist on Trejo's second goal this season.
Freshman
Kiara Padilla scored her first collegiate goal from the top of the box, taking advantage of an impressive through ball from junior
Jayden Wheeler.
"It felt good, and Jayden played me an awesome ball," Padilla said. "I saw the keeper come out, and I saw the back of the net.
"I knew I was behind and onside, and I just had to beat the keeper."
Freshman
Aliyah Hale scored from about 25 yards out when she lofted a shot over Chioma's fingertips.
"I just didn't want to miss it. I wanted to get my first goal," Hale said. "I just wanted to make sure it went in."
NSU logged its third straight win and will attempt to go for four when the Lady Demons host Jackson State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
