Trowbridge's second hat trick leads soccer to win

NATCHITOCHES – Senior April Trowbridge produced her second hat trick of the season Sunday to lead Northwestern State to a 5-0 win against LSU-Alexandria.

Trowbridge scored two of her three goals in the first half to give the Lady Demons (6-3) a commanding 3-0 halftime lead against the NAIA member Generals (1-3-1).

Her first goal was tipped by a defender before finding the back of the net in the eighth minute.

Trowbridge scored with a few minutes remaining in the first half by fighting through a wave of Generals defenders in the box for her second tally.

Then the Canadian capped her night by rebounding a Kylee Dominy shot for NSU's fourth goal.

"(The hat trick) was good, and we put up a fight tonight with it being hot and after Friday's heartbreaking (loss to Stephen F. Austin)," Trowbridge said. "We had a mentality to go after it the next day.

"The (Friday) loss still stings, but we rebounded well today."

Trowbridge has 10 goals this season, and Sunday's hat trick moved her into NSU's top 10 career lists in points (8th, 51) and goals (9th, 19). Her 10 goals is the most in a single-season since Kayce Schultz netted 12 in 2008.

But the nifty forward had plenty of help from other Lady Demons.

NSU possessed the ball to the extent that LSUA didn't record a shot. It's the second time in as many weekends the Lady Demons have held an opponent shotless and the fourth consecutive game in which the opponent has attempted less than five shots.

NSU posted its third shutout of the season, all in which redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Bomben started and freshman Sydney Normand entered at some point in the second half. Each keeper played one half Sunday.

Dominy tallied her second goal of the season as her shot from the top of the box ricocheted off a defender.

Dominy, who has started all nine games, had her second one-goal, one assist game (first against Louisiana Tech).

"The opportunity just came to me, and I took it," Dominy said. "It's been a very big adjustment to college soccer, but I knew I needed to step up, and that's what I've been doing.

"Whenever I got the ball at the top of the box, I knew I had to shoot it. I knew it was going in all the way."

A heads-up play from senior April Ficarrotta finished the NSU scoring. After freshman Hallie McCarroll earned and attempted a penalty kick, Ficarrotta rushed to the rebound and tapped it in for her first goal of the season.

"I wanted to go take the (penalty kick), but Hallie earned the foul and she should take it," Ficarrotta said. "But if it gets rebounded, I'm thinking it's mine.

"I saw it come out, and I darted down there. It was nerve racking, but I got down there, took a few touches and got it in."

Ficarrotta earned her first career start Sunday, and her 188 minutes played this season is already a career high.

"Confidence has been something I've struggled with the past few years, and it's something I rteally focused on this summer. It feels great to have my coaches and teammates support me and believe me, and it's helped me to be confident on the ball."

NSU ends nonconference play with six wins, its most since 2011. The Lady Demons, who dropped its Southland Conference opener in a heartbreaker Friday against SFA, continues league play at McNeese on Friday and Lamar on Sunday.
