Soccer prepares to rebound Sunday against LSUA

NATCHITOCHES – The Northwestern State soccer will attempt to rebound from Friday's loss to Stephen F. Austin as the Lady Demons close its five-game home stand by hosting LSU-Alexandria on Sunday at 5 p.m.

The programs have met one other time as NSU won 4-1 in the 2015 opener.

Fans filled the stands in 2015 as an enthusiastic bunch of Generals fans joined the always energetic NSU faithful in an overflow crowd at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. Sunday games, which are typically at 1 p.m., were altered for the LSUA match so more fans could make the trip for the surrounding areas.

The Lady Demons (5-3, 0-1 Southland Conference) took an important step Friday as they dominated SFA on the box score in a 1-0 loss. NSU outshot SFA 18-4 and 7-1 on goal, but the Ladyjacks took advantage of one of its few offensive opportunities in a 69th minute goal.

The four shots allowed marked the fifth contest in which the Lady Demons have allowed single-digit shots and the third straight match of fewer than five shot attempts. NSU didn't allow Southern to take a shot in a 5-0 win and held Jackson State to one shot attempt in an 8-0 blowout.

The SFA loss snapped a four-game winning streak for NSU in which it outscored its opponents 22-4. The Lady Demons entered Friday's match as the top-ranked offense in the nation with 3.57 goals per game before SFA kept NSU off the scoreboard.

But NSU will attempt to restart a winning streak Sunday against NAIA member LSU-A.

The Generals (1-2-1) picked up their first win of the season by beating NCAA Division I member Alcorn State 4-2. LSU-A dropped contests to two ranked NAIA opponents before tying Evangel 2-2 on Sept. 8.

While NSU was able to play Friday's game without a weather issue, storms scarred the opening night of SLC play across the league.

Only two other games were able to be played as Southeastern knocked off McNeese and Central Arkansas walloped Sam Houston State. The Lions edged the Cowgirls 2-1 and the Bears punished the Bearkats 5-0.
