Soccer focusing on selves in single-game week, hosts ULM on Sunday

NATCHITOCHES -- Four games into the regular season, first-year co-head coach Jess Jobe wanted to dig deep into how Northwestern State was progressing after the first two weekends of action.

With just one game this week, a Sunday home contest against ULM, the Lady Demons have perfect opportunity to focus on themselves before preparing for the 1 p.m. match in the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

"This is coming at a great time for us, and we get to watch a lot of film from our first four competitive matches," Jobe said. "We narrowed down some things we need to be better at, some things tactically in our system.

"We're continuing to define our style and the type of team we want to be and the way we play. Having just one game on Sunday this week gives us a lot of time to do that."

NSU (2-2) is undefeated on Sundays this season, topping Louisiana Tech 3-2 and Mississippi Valley State 4-2 on the road.

The Lady Demons have played three of their first four games on the road, but Sunday's home match kicks off a five-match homestand, NSU's longest stretch of home games since 2013.

"Road trips are tough on the body being on the bus all the time, and it's so nice to be around our other sports teams that support us. " said sophomore midfielder Alexis Weaver, whose role as a defensive midfielder is increasing. "It's a lot less hectic and crazy, so we'll take advantage of it hopefully.

"We'll benefit from the extra training we get with just one game this week. We usually have to start tapering off for a Friday game, but now we get three hard training sessions before getting ready for Sunday."

ULM (0-4) is looking for its first win of the season Friday at McNeese before stopping in Natchitoches for Sunday's match.

In their first four games, the Warhawks scored one total goal and have been shut out in the last three contests. Two of those shutouts have come against Louisiana Tech (4-0) and fellow Southland Conference member Central Arkansas (2-0).

NSU has scored all seven of its goals in two Sunday matches, and the Lady Demons hope the Sunday magic continues.

Freshman Jalen Donaldson helped boost NSU in the second half against MVSU, tallying the first of two second-half goals which allowed the Lady Demons to pull away for the win.

"It felt good to get my first goal, and it gave me confidence," Donaldson said. "I really like the level of play here and our style.

"The first home game was pretty cool with all the fans that came out, so I'm excited about getting back out there on Sunday.

Jobe appreciates the road tests early in the season with a squad that consists of 13 freshmen and six sophomores.

"Getting on the road is good experience for the younger players to see how we do things," Jobe said. "They've done a tremendous job of coming together and doing things we ask.

"We're happy where we are, but we're still maturing and in the middle of our process. We're excited to get back in front of our home fans, and we want to continue to take steps forward and continue to grow."

Senior forward April Trowbridge leads the team with three goals and seven points, both of which are tied for the Southland Conference lead.

Freshman Kylee Dominy and Donaldson each have a goal and an assist.

Admission is free, or fans can follow the action with live stats or live video (paid) on nsudemons.com or through NSU's new mobile app.
