LAFAYETTE – Despite being the aggressor for the majority of Friday's game, Northwestern State couldn't answer an early UL Lafayette goal as the Lady Demons fell 1-0 on the road.
The Lady Demons (1-2) held advantages of 10-9 in shots but more telling 6-1 in corner kicks, but NSU couldn't find the back of the net against a stout Ragin' Cajuns defense.
"It's tough to put a finger on why the result went the way it did tonight," said NSU co-head coach
Jess Jobe. "We were putting pressure on (the Cajuns) for most of the game, and they put us under in pressure in key moments, too.
"We really gave ourselves a chance to win, but we just couldn't come up with that goal. (The Cajuns) like to possess the ball and to keep a player high, but we were able to find some space behind them and limit what they wanted to do."
The Cajuns (1-1-1) scored in the sixth minute when Lexi Turner finished a close-range shot from in front of the goal after Telly Vunipola slipped a pass between multiple NSU defenders.
That was one of only two shots on goal for the Cajuns as redshirt sophomore
Kayla Bomben saved the other attempt.
Cajuns' keeper Mackenzie Lee needed four saves to keep her clean sheet as the Lady Demons harassed the Cajuns defense most of the night.
"We did a good job defensively, and we defended well on the outside against their playmakers," Jobe said. "The majority of their shots weren't on frame and ultimately weren't dangerous.
"We're disappointed in the result when you work so hard, but we reminded the girls that we outshot them, out possessed them and took more corner kicks. The girls wanted a different outcome, but we saw us take another step forward, and we're really happy about that."
Senior forward
April Trowbridge was NSU's most active attacker with three of her five shots finding the frame.
Five other Lady Demons attempted a shot, including a
Jayden Wheeler attempt that ricocheted off the far post in the 61
st minute.
But the Lady Demons weren't able to score for the second time in three games after a 1-0 loss to Texas San Antonio this past week.
After the Cajuns' early goal, NSU thwarted every attack UL Lafayette could muster as the Cajuns took just one other shot on goal. The Cajuns had a couple of dangerous possessions, but ultimately, their early goal stood up to NSU pressure for their first win of the season.
The Cajuns extended their winning streak against NSU to six straight, increasing its all-time series lead to 9-7.
