THIBODAUX – Pitcher
Micaela Bouvier and the Northwestern State defense stranded one Nicholls runner at third base with no outs Saturday, but the Lady Demons couldn't repeat the feat in the last inning of the series finale.
Corynn Major produced Nicholls' second straight lead-off triple and then scored the game's only run as the Colonels finished the sweep 1-0.
Nicholls run-ruled NSU 8-0 in five innings after taking Friday's game 4-3. The Lady Demons (24-19, 11-10 SLC) are on a season-long seven-game losing streak after being swept in consecutive Southland Conference series for the first time since 2012 (two-game series vs. Sam Houston State and UTSA).
NSU is in seventh place ahead of Sam Houston State (19-28, 10-11 SLC) and Lamar (24-23, 9-11 SLC). Nicholls (32-13, 15-6) matched Stephen F. Austin (27-17, 15-6) with McNeese (32-16, 14-6) trying to reach that mark in the finale Saturday.
In Saturday's finale, Bouvier (12-8) scooted around an Amanda Gianelloni triple in the sixth inning by striking out two Colonels before an inning-ending ground out.
But after Major's triple in the seventh inning, Lara ended the game two batters later when she lifted a single out of the infield.
It spoiled a second solid outing from Bouvier (12-8), who scattered six hits and four walks Saturday with five strikeouts. Four of those strikeouts ended innings. On Friday, Bouvier allowed one earned run in four innings.
Counterpart Megan Landry (18-7) secured her second win of the series by spreading five NSU hits.
NSU's most threatening inning came in the third when Kayla Roquemore and Cayla Jones singled with one out each.
Roquemore, who was making her second start of the season, collected two hits along with Kaitlyn St. Clair.
Nicholls' Lara and Major each had two hits for the Colonels.
Bouvier worked out of other trouble to keep the game scoreless until the seventh inning.
Nicholls 8. NSU 0 (5)
Northwestern State couldn't find its offense against Nicholls freshman Alexis LaBure as the Colonels raced to an 8-0 win in five innings.
LaBure took a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the Lady Demons mustered a single hit on the day – a Julie Rawls single.
LaBure struck out six in five innings with no walks.
The Colonels struck early and often with eight runs combined in the second through fifth innings on a combined 13 hits.
A Moriah Strother (3-for-3) home run scored two in the second inning after Kali Clement drew a walk for a 2-0 lead.
Clement tripled in two runs in the third inning before Strother drove in another for a 5-0 lead. All three runs were unearned after shortstop Elyssa Hernandez couldn't come up with a pop up on the run to lead off the inning.
After a Lara RBI double handed Nicholls a 6-0 lead, NSU third baseman Sidney Harris ended a bases-loaded threat by turning an unassisted double play when she caught a line drive and stepped on third base.
Sophomore Julie Rawls broke up LaBure's no-hitter in the fifth inning when she singled through the left side. Rawls stole second base to put an NSU runner in scoring position with one out, but LaBure got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
Nicholls ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when Miller (2-for-3) and Lara (3-for-3) produced RBIs.
NSU starter
Mikayla Brown allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits in 2 2-3 innings. Reliever E.C. Delafield surrendered three runs on eight hits in two innings.
Nicholls improves its home record in the last two seasons to 32-4.
