PINE BLUFF, Arkansas -- Northwestern State needed a little offensive boost to power past Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first game before coasting to a second-game win Tuesday on the road.
Â
The Lady Demons (2-3) collected wins of 7-2 and 12-1 (five innings) against UAPB (2-2) for NSU's first victories of the season.
Â
"We got good pitching from Micaela Bovier and
Mikayla Brown, and our staff overall did a good job in both games," Pickett said. "Katilyn St. Clair, Sidney Harris and Cayla Jones led us offensively in the first game, but we've got to continue to grow from a mental aspect.
Â
"We jumped on them in the second game, and
Sidney Salmans came up with a couple of hits with St. Clair hitting a big double."
Â
In the first game, NSU was tied 2-2 in the first game before Sidney Harris hit her first career home run in the fourth inning, creating separation.
Â
The Lady Demons added five runs in the last four innings to pull away for a 7-2 win.
Â
Bouvier (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts in her first victory since 2016.
Â
St. Clair, who has started in right field each of the last three games, went 3-for-4 with an RBI-triple. NSU also stole nine bases with a pair each by Hayley Barbazon (2-for-4), Jones (1-for-3, RBI) and St. Clair.
Â
Emma Hawthorne also contributed a pair of RBIs in a 2-for-4 effort as NSU collected a season-high 10 hits in each game.
Â
NSU 12, UAPB 1 (5 innings)
Â
The same level of suspense didn't accompany the second game of the doubleheader.
Â
NSU scored five runs in the first inning of a five-inning win.
Freshman E.C. Delafield collected three RBIs on a 2-for-2 day, including a triple.
Â
Sophomores Sidney Harris (three runs scored) and Emma Hawthorne (2-for-2, two runs) also had two RBIs each.
Â
Junior pitcher
Mikayla Brown (1-1) allowed just one hit in her 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Â
UAPB scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a Delafield wild pitch.
Northwestern State opens its home schedule Friday in a three-day Lady Demon Classic tournament. NSU will play six games against a combination of Memphis, Stephen F. Austin and Jackson State.
Â
The tournament is sponsored by the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission.
