Despite loss, soccer qualifies for Southland Conference Tournament

CONWAY, Arkansas – Despite a 5-0 loss to Central Arkansas on Friday, the Northwestern State soccer team's season won't end with the defeat in the regular season finale.

The Lady Demons (10-9, 4-7 Southland Conference) qualified for the league tournament for the second time in three seasons after Incarnate Word fell at Abilene Christian 1-0 on an 88th minute goal.

NSU will be the No. 8 seed and have to face regular season conference champion UCA again in the first round of the tournament.

"We're still thankful that we have an opportunity to play because it wasn't certain entering today's game," said first-year co-head coach Jess Jobe. "We'll have to mentally make some adjustments before Wednesday, and we didn't start confidently like we were playing to win.

"That's part of being a young team. The task was a little tall for us tonight, but we faced a really good UCA team that wanted to finish their season in style."

The SLC Tournament starts Wednesday in Beaumont, Texas, at tournament host Lamar. NSU made the tournament in 2016 as a No. 3 seed, ending an eight-season drought.

UCA's Camille Bassett scored two goals and assisted on another as UCA took a 3-0 lead.

Two of those goals were in the first half on a pair of counterattacks. Bassett assisted on a Connie Awuku-Darkoh goal in the third minute and scored her own in the 29th minute.

The senior finished her scoring 72nd minute on a penalty kick before UCA added two more goals in the closing minutes.

UCA outshot NSU 19-8 and 12-4 on goal, a hallmark on which the Lady Demons have typically relied.

"We want to prove that we're a better team than we showed tonight," Jobe said. "We'll get back after it Wednesday.

"We're really familiar now with UCA's weapons and the way they play. It'll be fresh in our minds, and we'll work on a few of the moments that we struggled with."

NSU's three-game winning streak was snapped as UCA extended its winning streak to a program record nine games and remained undefeated at home this season.

The Lady Demons had been competitive against teams that were atop the SLC standings, pushing Lamar (1-0 loss) and Houston Baptist (1-0 overtime loss).
