Soccer attempts to rebound in Sunday match at TAMU-CC

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Northwestern State soccer team is no stranger to rebounding from tough Friday night losses to produce strong matches on Sundays.

But even NSU first-year co-head coach Jess Jobe recognizes how tough Friday's 1-0 overtime loss at Southland Conference-leading Houston Baptist will be.

NSU (7-8, 1-6 SLC) heads further south to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-5-3, 2-3-2 SLC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"It hurts right now, but we have to focus on Sunday because we still have three points available to us," Jobe said. "Time after time, we've done a great job of bouncing back.

"We continue to ask them to believe. The leaders on our team know and have heard this story before, but teams do make late runs and sneak in (to the Southland Conference Tournament). We believe it's possible, and we've proven that we can do it."

NSU has won three Sunday games this season after one-goal losses on a Friday night. In a fourth weekend, the Lady Demons bounced back from a big loss at McNeese to push defending champion Lamar to the brink.

The Lady Demons won't be alone in attempting to rebound from heartbreaking losses Friday.

The Islanders battled Central Arkansas in a 2-1 loss, and all six league games Friday were decided by one goal or tied (three in overtime).

NSU has three points in the standings, and the cutoff for the tournament after Friday's results is eight points with four regular season games remaining.

The Islanders are 1-3-1 in their last five matches, while the Lady Demons are attempting to snap its three-match losing streak following its lone conference win against Incarnate Word.

The last time these two teams met in Corpus Christi, the Islanders snapped NSU's five-match winning streak. TAMU-CC has won the last two meetings.

"We've talked about luck and how we can't count on it, but I thought we did a great job of creating it (Friday)," said Jobe, whose NSU team outshot HBU 11-10 and had one shot bounce twice off the crossbar. "We have to maintain belief and mental toughness because we've played with the best teams in this conference.

"We believe we'll do that (Sunday), and we can't dwell on (Friday's) loss too long."

Senior April Trowbridge still leads the league with 11 goals and is second with five assists this season.
