Weaver's first collegiate goal not enough against Lamar

NATCHITOCHES -- Despite a more energetic second half, Northwestern State couldn't climb out of a two-goal deficit as the Lady Demons dropped Sunday's match 2-1 to Lamar.

NSU freshman Alexis Weaver quickly answered Lamar's second goal with her first collegiate goal in the 67th minute, but the Lady Demons (4-6, 0-3 Southland Conference) couldn't find the equalizer as NSU dropped to 0-3 in league play.

Weaver beat the keeper from near the 6-yard box on a free-kick pass from junior Aprll Trowbridge, who leads the team with four assists and 10 points.

But the Cardinals (7-3-1, 2-1 SLC) protected its lead by possessing the ball, a trait that worked well in a dominating first half.

"Lamar had a great first half, and that really was the difference," said NSU coach George Van Linder. "We're not really sure why we came out flat because we always talk to the team about that.

"We had a better second half, but we just have to take care of those chances. We feel like we had enough talent to win this one today, and we feel that way in any Southland Conference game."

Lamar scratched the scoreboard when Lucy Ashworth took advantage of a turnover in NSU's backline, finding Kelso Peskin in the box for a goal in the 18th minute.

The Cardinals turned to its backline as defender Marie Lund played a long ball to Ashworth in the 66th minute, and Ashworth placed a high-rising shot over NSU goal keeper Alex Latham.

Weaver kept NSU in the match with a goal less than two minutes later, but the Lady Demons couldn't generate many offensive opportunities against a Lamar squad that possessed the ball.

Weaver took two of NSU's three shots on goal as Brittany Caserma supplied the other.

Lamar held a 10-6 edge in shots taken and a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Cardinals' goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy made two saves in the win, while NSU's Latham supplied three saves in the loss.

NSU must turn to the road in an attempt to snatch its first SLC win as the Lady Demons head to Incarnate Word on Friday and Abilene Christian on Sunday.
