LAFAYETTE – Bouncing back from disappointing results won't be new for the Northwestern State soccer team.
But the Lady Demons (2-2) must move past a heartbreaking 3-2, double-overtime loss Friday to Texas State in which NSU scored two late regulation goals to force extra time.
Texas State scored the game-winner with just 28 seconds remaining in double overtime.
NSU won't have much recovery time as the Lady Demons head to UL Lafayette on Sunday for a 6 p.m. match.
"I told the team that they fought hard on Friday and we are really proud of them," said NSU coach
George Van Linder. "But we can't let (Friday's result), affect Sunday's game.
"ULL will be another battle just like Texas State. It's a great chance for us to experience being in a dog fight, and hopefully we can come out on top of one of these."
Earlier in the season, NSU recovered from an 8-0 loss at Ole Miss to win at ULM, 1-0.
ULL (1-3) earned its first win of the season Friday in a 1-0 win against Southeastern.
The Ragin' Cajuns have played two other Southland Conference teams, falling to Lamar (3-1 score) and McNeese (2-0).
ULL has won all three meetings with NSU in the Van Linder era, two by one goal. The Ragin' Cajuns won 1-0 in the last meeting in 2015 in Lafayette.
NSU beat LSU Shreveport 12-0 and lost to Ole Miss 8-0 to open the season before a pair of one-goal games (beating ULM 1-0 and losing to Texas State).
The Lady Demons went 6-4 in one-goal games in 2016 to spark its turnaround to a 10-8 season and third-place finish in the Southland Conference. NSU lost its first two one-goal decisions before going 6-2 against league teams in one-goal games.
On Friday, freshman Yeaya Gamboa sparked a late comeback to tie Texas State.
Gamboa took a shot in the 78
th minute that caused a Texas State own goal to cut the Bobcats' deficit to 2-1.
Just two minutes later, Gamboa rocketed a shot from about 30 yards to tie the game with an assist from senior
Cache' Haley.
Gamboa leads the team with four goals after producing a hat trick in the second half of the LSUS match.
