Early Little Rock offense guides Trojans past Demons

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – The Northwestern State baseball team's mid-week win streak ended in a flurry of early extra-base hits Tuesday night.

Little Rock used three extra-base hits in the first two innings, scoring seven runs in the process to set the tone for a 13-1 victory against the Demons at Gary Hogan Field.

The Demons (18-29) missed a chance to put together their first three-game win streak of the season as the Trojans scored three times in the first inning and four times in the second.

The first three Little Rock (18-30) hitters reached base, capped by Riley Pittman's three-run home run off Demons starter Tim Winders (1-5).

After Winders retired the final three batters of the inning, the Trojans started up again in the second inning as Kale Emshoff and Christian Reyes singled before Ty Gunter sacrificed the runners up.

Reyes scored on a wild pitch before Hunter Owens tripled home Baker and scored on a Pittman double.

Given a big early cushion, Little Rock right-hander Carter Brown (3-1) made it stand up. Brown scattered six hits, allowing one run in eight innings to notch his third win of the season.

Brown faced the minimum until the fifth inning when the Demons put together their first real rally of the game.

Townsend followed Tyler Smith's one-out bunt single with a two-out single before Hunter Uzzle drew a walk to load the bases. Third baseman Ty Gunter stifled the threat by robbing Caleb Ricca of an extra-base hit with a back-handed stop and throw that nipped Ricca by a half step at first base.

Northwestern State broke through against Brown in the eighth inning when Cade Jones, playing 35 miles from his hometown of Conway, Arkansas, delivered a two-out RBI single to right field.

Townsend finished 2-for-3 and was the lone Demon who finished with multiple hits. Pittman led Little Rock's 15-hit attack with a 3-for-4, two-homer game, finishing with six RBIs.

The Demons return to action Friday when they travel to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian in a three-game Southland Conference series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Crutcher-Scott Field.
