Late surge pushes ULM over NSU softball Wednesday

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State and ULM were gridlocked for the majority of Wednesday's game, but the Warhawks surged late to hand the Lady Demons a 6-2 loss.

Tied 1-1 entering the sixth inning, ULM (21-15) scored five runs in its final two at-bats to beat Northwestern State (14-23-1) for the third time this season.

Sophomore pitcher Mikayla Brown (8-10), who had won her last four starts, couldn't finish off the Warhawks after holding them to one run through five innings.

ULM's Hunter Hogan hit a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning before pitcher Melanie Coyne helped her own cause with a three-RBI double in the seventh inning.

Brown allowed six runs on seven hits with two walks and two hit-by-pitches.

ULM scored three of its four runners who reached by walk or hit-by-pitch.

Warhawks junior Cheyanne Lyon started that trend in the first inning when she scored on a Samantha Agamaite single with two outs.

NSU answered with a Toni Hebert sacrifice fly to score Kellye Kincannon, tying the game 1-1 in the fourth inning. Kincannon (2-for-2, one walk) doubled to start the inning.

Down 3-1, Kincannon smacked her team-high ninth home run of the season to keep the Lady Demons within reach.

The Lake Jackson, Texas, native has 51 career home runs, three away from breaking former teammate Cassandra Barefield's program record.

But Coyne (13-8) closed the door on NSU, retiring the final six Lady Demons for her second win over NSU this season.

Coyne allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in a complete game.

ULM won 8-5 and 5-3 in the first month of the season.

The Lady Demons return home to play Incarnate Word on Friday at 5 p.m. to start a three-game series.
